to much for a clown IMO. nothing more then selective breeding, i fear that clowns will soon become the saltwater equivalent of freshwater guppies where people will breed them for certain characteristics.

My first assumption was that clown will be cheap. The price made me laugh.

It's like a fish with Michael Jackson skin disorder.

It looks like two oscellaris that got stuck in the powerhead and survived.

Their only worth what someone is willing to pay! if someone pays $400 for the pair then there must be a market for them.

I'd rather strive to get the most perfect specimen as classically described for that species, rather than some abnormality, but that's just me. That's why I liked my plain ol' ocellaris so much.

Wow, gorgeous, Peter.

Re the 'painted' clowns, I think they're pretty cool, but not for that price. Really, they're just mutations that would have never made it in nature, but the breeders said 'I can make some bucks off this, let's not cull them'. I don't think this is really 'selective' breeding, I doubt if this trait breeds true in any way. It is probably just a recessive gene that both parents happened to have, producing only a few in the batch with the trait.

I don't see any problem with trying to encourage these mutations, and I doubt that they will become a standard in the market. IMO, any captive breeding is a good thing, no way these things are going to infiltrate wild stock.

To each their own, I guess.

I personally like them and would probably buy them if I didn't already have a pair of true percs. The odds of you seeing that fish in the store are slim to none and thats what drives the price. Just my 02.
