Macro shots

I'm not getting much love in my other thread, so I figured I'd pimp my stuff here. Pics from sunset today at my reef.

Thanks
Josh

Yes, excellent shots of the corals. What type of lens are you using to take those? I've gotten some decent shots with my canon 100mm f/2.8 macro, but most of my shots don't quite compare with yours. Of course, it also looks like you have an acrylic tank, which must help with the clarity of the shot. I'm also starting to curse having a bowfront when it comes to photography. I like the look of the tank, but it noticably distorts photos, especially when taken at any sort of angle.

How long have you had your elegance? It looks pretty good.

Funny thing is, I don't have a macro lense for my Nikon D100. These were actually taken with my Nikon S6.

Not too shabby for a sub $1000 camera with a built in lens.

That elegance coral is actually a close up shot of a branch of my Hydnaphora coral. It's a hard coral. Those are just it's tiny little polyps extended.

At least I think you're referring to the hydnaphora. I do not own any elegance coral.

Thanks
Josh

Oh really. I have a hydnaphora too. I guess it looks similar in a close up to the elegance. How do you like the D100? I have a D50 and love it.

Got the tank in November 2005. Added water and rock in Jan 06. Added my first fish and coral in February 06.

Thanks
Josh

The D100 is a good camera. I'm amazed at its quality. It's over 4 years old but was so ahead of its time when it was released that even today it competes well with the other DSLRs. I was so reluctant to move from film to digital. everyone as asking me when i'd move. When the D100 was announced it time. It was over 6 MP, it was an SLR, it would accept all of my existinf Nikkor lenses and flashes. It was the perfect camera. I picked one up as soon as it came out and have taken over 2 gigs of photos a month with it since 2002.

I was considering picking up a D200, but I think I might wait until Nikon has a full frame DSLR in the market.

Thanks
Josh

Thanks for sharing. Everything is looking great.

Question about the chiller. Is it noisy? I've never actually seen a chiller in person, so I have no idea.

I've seen ones with drop-in coils, but it looks like yours is designed for flow-through. Do you have any pics of your plumbing underneath?

Yes, they are noisy, but like a A/C unit.

At first, it's like, wow, that's noisey! But then after a few weeks, the sound doesn't stick out as much since it's just the fan you hear.

As far as plumbing design you can go to my blog
http://fmellish.shackspace.com/aquarium/
and select June from the dropdown list, and then look at the entry for June 6th. There are some pics there of my initial inline plumb.

However I have changed it since then to have its own dedicated pump. It was just adding too much head pressure.

Cheers
Josh

Very cool. I need to take some more macro shots of my corals. It's such a cool perspective.
