The "rule" is 1 per gallon. As far as I'm concerned, that can include the nassarius in the sandbed too. Now buying 24 snails for your tiny tank will seem expensive and overkill, but having 10 might be plenty.

It really comes down to how much algae is in the tank and how quickly your glass gets covered with a film.

You mentioned 2 Astrea and 3 Turbos. Are you talking about 3 huge Mexican Turbos? If so, you could get 3 Ceriths and a fighting conch, and you'd be set.

geez thanx for calling my tank tiny marc. everything is small compared to your 280g. i mean COME ON

they are all relatively small at the moment so i guess i'll add 5 or 6 more. my old fighting conch seemed to knock against everything so i threw it in my 29g fowlr.

Hey Marc, where are you at with the Prodibio? Are you still using it and have you noticed any positives or negatives? I'm about to start using ReefResh again, I think any positives I've seen are minimal. I have half the supply left so I'll see.

I apologize if you just mentioned anything about Prodibio recently, I think it's been a while.

Sorry about that. I didn't mean it that way. I think I'm getting 280 gallon-itis over here. I too had a 29g tiny tank for 7 years....

I stopped dosing about 6 or 8 weeks ago. I just stopped because I had other things cropping up, and I don't like to cloud the issues when trying to solve problems. Considering the water quality that has been looking very good for some time now, I'm leaning toward using it again. I'd like to get the AEFW thing behind me though.

I was told by Dr Shimek that a 75 gallon with an pretty open sandbed (at least 50%) was the minimum sandbed size to keep one fighting conch alive longer than two years(minimum success by him, as they can live up to 10 years or more).

I had two, so traded one and since then I've discovered that it will also eat sinking algae wafers to supplement its diet.

Brian

Snails, cucumber, conch, hermits... they all work together. You should probably remove empty shells manually if you want the sand sparkling clean.

I have been just leaving the shells. They move around occassionally. I just had an electric blue hermit trade up from his shell to a large Turbo sp. shell that had been on the bottom for a couple weeks. He looks a bit strange in the giant shell but he is struttin' his stuff! I figure if I leave enough empty shells in the tank that may discourage the hermits from killing snails for their shells.

I comb the top layer of my sand a couple times a week with a rake-like device.

But I am really low on snails and crabs right now.

The smallest bottle (8oz) would be good for your first bottle.

I had 2 of them (2") in a 60 cube for about 2 years. I did not spot feed them anything and the were fine when I took the tank down and gave them away.
I must have had a very dirty SB!

It should work and will take longer to darken up. You can always add more today.

Marc,

I have gotten red bugs back on my Tri-Color Acro.

I read your Red Bugs - No More! article on your site. When was the treatment of your coral and have you seen a re-infestation?

Last time I treated every coral in the tank for 15 days with multiple treatments and many water changes. And now they are back. So I was thinking of using your method, just wondering if it was successful long term.

thanks
Keith

I just read that in your thread, Keith.

The coral I treated is red bug free. However, if there are any in the tank, we both know they have the ability to crawl onto the coral again. So far, none found the A. granulosa.

Cool Thanks,

Your method is so much easy than the whole 15 days in a QT tank thing.

So I'm going to try that this time.

Keith
