One of my co-workers sold a purple rhinopius (sp?) for $1,100 a couple weeks ago... a lot of money but wow was that fish gorgous. When I say purple I mean PURPLE, and it was stressed too...

I can't believe some of the prices quoted in this thread - absurd! A fish is a fish. Maybe if it could talk or sing or get into the fridge and thaw food for itself I might be willing to pay more. Until then I'm capped at $100 - and before I spend that much the fish better look like it is fit enough to swim across the ocean.

The most i've paid for a fish was a $45 Blue Tang, that is Australian dollars though, lol so more like $30 US

i am kinda used to spending alot of money on animals, when i was doing reptiles, i had several $300+ lizards, a few $500+ snakes. It can get really expensive

Not super expensive.....but has anyone have any luck with them? When I worked for a LFS, we got one in but it only lived about five minutes after coming out of the bag. It doesnt even look like a hogfish to me not to mention its so tiny.

eh, theyre just designer stuff or rare, and sometimes its about being rare, and sometimes people just want what they want.

$500 snakes is pocket lint compared to what some people are doing with ball pythons. just google ball python morphs and noticed that there are like 30 or so different genetic color variations and such. bob clark produced the first albino reticulated pythons from a wild caught specimen that he paid 75k for. its not uncommon to see designer ball pythons morphs go for 10K - 60K

when that snake came out it was over 25k. I say all of this because at the end of the day, it doesn't matter what you think its worth, its worth as much as someone will pay for it. So if I wanted a peppermint angel, and had the cash, who cares what anyone anywhere thinks its worth? Many people think its worth $150 - $300 per month just to smoke cigarettes, which is the biggest waste of money, it doesnt even get you high!

I paid 200.00 for a Majestic Angel about 10 years ago and I still feel guilty about it. I want a harlequin tuskfish but the LFS wants 118.00 for it and I just can't bring myself to buy it. But, people pay a lot more for baseball cards so its all relative I guess.

Expensive fish aren't necessarily rare (in nature) .. just rarely seen in the aquarium trade ... sometimes due to distance from market and collection areas.

I've been looking for a Semilarvatus Butterfly for years. I believe they are very common but only in the Red Sea area. However, they usually are priced well over $100.

I lucked out last week .. my LFS had a 4" Semilarvatus markes at only $36. He's doing great in my tank. ;-)

big difference between rare and rare in captivity. people aren't getting fish on the endangered species list just not as common and hard to catch because they live deep or in few locations. Just like the Gem tangs. They come from one place and one person collects there.

I think thats the whole point here, and well put.

It just drives me nuts when someone spends $1000 on a fish because it is "Rare" and "trendy" and it ends up being ugly. Buy a fish because you like its behavior and looks, not because its rare.

I got not problem with people spending $500 on a C. Interruptus..theyre gorgoeus, but $500 on a black tank? The $14 yellow tang is the same fish.

I just ordered a few expensive wrasses and one of those high dollar tangs. Can't wait till they get here.

I have seen a clarion angel at my LFS listed for $5000. They get rare fish quite often and when they do they usually sell within two weeks so someone out there is willing to pay those rediculous prices.

dont get started about discounts in the USA. The only place that should really complian is Japan but they get the best stuff. In London Deltec is half of what it is here.

The most I've spent is a medium sized (adolescent aged) blue tang $59.95. We have a fish store near me that gets alot of wrasse in stock. I've seen them sell a Lineatus wrasse there for $300. And that's slightly overcharging because you should beable to get one for $250.

On and I think I saw some kind of rare eel at another one of my stores for about $1,200.
