There may be some truth to this... I've had a good number of snail deaths from late Feb - May (30 that I could retrieve a shell for) which appears to coincide with the cyano outbreak I had. Bristle worms do get to them, but I dunno how efficient they are at processing the snail and whether or not phosphates accumulate as a result. I had a bristle worm population explosion as well during that time period. They do not appear as prevalent these days as I now take out the dead snails instead of leaving them to rot. Bristle worms can go after detritus if they're hungry

The snail butchers were a few red-legged hermits and/or getting flipped on their backs.

Just thought I'd share my recent experience.

I like Bogen, with a Bogen ball head.

IME with a good tripod and ball head, releasing the shutter will not move the camera. Just make sure the legs are fa enough apart so the tripod has proper support.

I haven't used it again, but I'm getting more Cyano in the refugium all over again. In trying to figure out the culprit, I'm wondering if it is being fueled by the smelt (silversides) from the asian food market. I will be dosing my tank again, because I need that stuff gone.

I may make a new batch of food and not include the smelt to see if that resolves this problem.

what about lighting? Did you change that? Or perhaps you have a life cycle going on in there like the wax and wane of pods with a large die-off? I know you are running RowaPhos so that shouldn't be a problem.

I had a similar issue and it is gone now. I am sure it was because of the new lights I put up, and possibly combined with slow through-flow. Are you sure water is flowing well into and out of the fuge? Could there be a blockage of some kind?

What is the temp. of the fuge itself? I did nothing to "fix" mine other than to clean out much of the cyano and change out the RowaPhos. Now I have copious amount of macro. I pull out about 1 qt. of cheato every other day.

Lighting should be fine. Flow is very slow in that section, and any pump I put in there gets covered with algae tendrils. It is time to change the rowaPHOS.

Well, if theres one thing this hobby keeps reminding us is patience.

It appears like I am slowly winning the battle with the cyano in mine. Looking at it day-to-day, it may not seem like it but on a week-by-week and month-by-month basis you can definitely notice that the tank has improved. I was debating whether or not to kill what little is left off with the red slime control - chemi clean has limited effect these days (last dosage about two months ago). But weekly water changes, phosban reactor, skimming wetter, less feedings of nori for my one tang and new batch of chaeto in the refugium have been doing their part at reducing the stuff - hence why I'm waiting it out to try another chemical product.
If you had told me that there was no more signs of cyano in your tank/fuge, then I would have been sold on the idea of using it. It's just aggravating seeing it come back after thinking its gone.

The health of your livestock shows you are keeping excellent conditions in the tank. Again, I'm still goggling the photo of the clam from the other day.

cyano - is not that hairy - more like a slime. it mats over stuff can appear to have red wisps when in a thick cluster/mat.

It looks like cotton candy algae to me (not sure of real name). I had it last year and it's cropping up again. I got some Mexican Turbo Snails and they took care of it all in a few days. Over the year they have died off and now I have the problem again so I just picked up 6 more and I am acclimating them right now.

I have always had it in my sump but never in the display. Mexican Turbos in the display, and since you (Cprowler) told me the the Turbos eat it, I moved some to the sump but they can't quite keep up. Good to know it's not Cyano though.

Thanks Guys.

Today, the A. nobilis in my tank decided to fall forward into the frilly mushrooms for about the 10th time. Since I couldn't get it back into position where I wanted it, I pulled out a rock that was covered with green mushrooms and a couple of frillies.

Using a version of bone cutters, I cut out the stone layer beneath each mushroom to remove every trace of their tissue. Once the rock was clean of them, I took it to the garage and bored a hole through it with a masonry bit.

The A. nobilis was inserted into the hole after I trimmed the base to fit, and using the TLF two-part putty, it was secured. What frags broke off the coral were glued onto a small bit of LR and this was placed near the A. nobilis in hopes it will encrust the base some day, and fill in the area there.

Melev, glad to see you taking pics again. I get so lonely without them J/K. Can I ask you a question about lighting? Which lighting system do you think is better, single MH or DE, for lighting a 210g? Does it even really matter? Thanks for the advice!

What are the dimensions of the tank (length and width)? 72 x 24?

Watt for watt, they should be the same power consumption, but PAR is what you want to compare. And also you need to remember with DE you have to have a UV shield where with SE you don't.

I have a DE light over the prop section, and I have to wipe down that glass shield or it obscures the lighting considerably.

SE are easier to install, and easy to clean. DE require you to be more careful in the installation process, as they are brittle and can snap.

Marc

Thanks for the tank tour Thursday night/ Friday morning. I found out first hand you really have the "stripper night life" lifestyle...I had to bow out around 2am. 6am came early. But it was worth it. I had a blast hanging with you and learned alot. Thanks a million.

Everyone, Marc's tank is INCREDIBLE!!! Even as good as Marc's pictures are they do not do the tank justice. A picture of the full tank shot looks nice, but in person it really is breathtaking! The growth of the corals since the first pictures in the thread is very cool.

If everyone had Marc's heart of a teacher, always wanting to give information just because he has done it and learned what to do and what not to do, the world woud be alot nicer place to live.

Cudos to Mark!!!!!

Bart

You said that Euro Reef was sending you a "upgrade" for your skimmer to take in additional air. Let us know what you think as soon as you have an opinion. -Please describe it again and maybe where we can get the same upgrade. I have 2 sedra 9000 pumps, so I am interested in learning more...
