Try posting the actual pictures so that we dont have to download a file. You'll probably get quicker responses.
Thanks |

I am officially never going to download another file again. Go to photo bucket and learn how to post your pics. As far as your rock goes i am to discusted by the fact i just had to download the pics to see them. i thought it was a typical link not a actual download

i would probably pull all that algae off, if for no other reason than to make sure it doesn't die off in your tank.
looks like you got some nice stuff growing on the rocks though. looks fresh from the ocean. i've never gotten rock quite so covered. i would be cautious about adding rock with so much...stuff... on it right into your tank, but again, i don't have any experience to back this statement up. |

Looks like Gulf rock, did you get a package from tampabaysaltwater.com perhaps ?
I see a gorgonian just like some I have. a lot of coral that is common in the gulf, with care it will do good, seems to not like to much light. the alge will take a bit of time to reduce. but if it's TBS rock you will have a lot of good life to fill your tank! just keep an eye out for the gorrila crabs ![]()

![]() anyways, yes, you'll get better responses if people dont have to dl them. true, normally .zip files are pretty safe, especially if you use winrar, because it scans as you try to unzip.

Where exactly did you receive your rock from? It looks like there's hair algae and caluerpa algae growing on them...stuff you typically wouldn't want growing in your main tank. If it was me, I'd banish those pieces to the fuge. Otherwise, you'll have a heck of a time doing battle trying to prevent both of those algaes from taking over.

Your all right, I need to de-algae the new rock, and probably will put some in the refugium.
It is Glf rock, a diver who has an online store has lots of it, w w w . Gulfliverock . Com I think, or something with Gulf in the name. I heard about his rock in a lot of places. Is the big red bush picture algae too though? I think all the green stuff is culpera and algae. The purple baseball sized polyp looking piece is real nice, but you think this should be mid to low in the tank further than closer to the lights?

That is nice rock. What was the cost for that stuff? You got all those polyps and sponges and such. Don't worry about the algae as long as your running a fuge that stuff will disappear. I am gonna check that site out. A local guy sells fresh sea rock with everything on it for 12.99 a lb and it is beatiful but too expensive. Tampa bay salt is also expensive but I am thinking about ordering some rock from them for my new 150g

I'd definitely make sure I got ALL of the algae off of those rocks before I put them in the display. Caulerpa is tough to keep under control.

"Don't worry about the algae as long as your running a fuge that stuff will disappear" Sorry Sean, but that is completely not true.
You've got several different kinds of Caulerpa growing on there as well as some red aglaes. These are all macroalgaes and will not diminish with a fuge. They will keep growing in your display whether you want them or not. They can be very beautiful for sure, I love planted marine tanks, but if you don't want them around.... we you'll have to do something about them. That gorgonian is looking a little rough too.

i definately wouldn't want a fuge to make all that stuff on those rocks disappear. i don't know how much of that stuff will make it, and how much won't. but you're basically putting a full ecology of "stuff" in the tank without it growing into your tank's conditions, and some of it probably won't make it. you don't want all that dieoff in your tank. better to start with 'cleaner' rock, and let the tank work out for itself what it will support.
again, never been in your situation, but just seems more intuitive. |

the seller was www floridaliverock com i got his top deco roch, hand picked at only 5.99lb and he was very generous on his weighing.. think i got 30lbs.. paid for 20lbs. some of the macro algae i will keep, the "money chain" will be okay, other stuff i will pull off and scrub.. i like the gorgonian, it's big, and was happy to get it on the rock, also the corralline encrted tree is cool.. there is a big red bush i like alot.. but some of the other stuff can go, or be eaten by tangs.. ive also bought 100lbs from other online more popular fuji and carribian rock sellers and wasn't at all as happy as what this guy gave me. he has other rock, with less growth for alot less too.. for him it is all profit anyway.

do export a lot of the alge by hand, do use a turkey baster or small power head to "blow off" the rock as you will generaly find a lot of fine gunk in crevices at first. expect to find a lot of good htchikers but also look out for crabs and mantis shrimp. do you know about them? if not start serching and reading. they will eat a lot of things like snails and small crabs like hermit crabs and even small fish. they can cut your hand and hurt like the Heck! ![]() but overall i'd say the gulf rock can be a great way to add diversity to a system.

in my pics above, maybe pic#2 the purple tree like growth is a gorgonian? i was thinking the gorgonian was the purple lumpy shaped growth shown in pic 3, the left side of 4, and the last pic.. what is this thing then??
thanks by the way to all, for help!!

I'd pull the caulerpa only off of the rock. If you want caulerpa you can always add it back in later at essentially no cost, but if you leave it and try to remove it later you'll be pulling your hair out. I'd leave the other algaes.

the next-to-last is hard to say, get a better photo if you can. most of the rest is a common coral - I do not know the name. if it's in the right condtions it is often an orange/yellow color but turns white often. with that next-to-last see if you can get a macro / close up in focus that shows a polyop open and one closed. if we can count the arms we can narrow down what it might be. example: gorgonians like you and I have are called "Octocoral" they have 8 arms on the feeder polyop. most true coral have 6 or multiple of 6 - "Hexacoral" ![]()
