Eek a crab!
ok so i have a 24 gal AP and a few mins ago i was just looking in my tank and what do i find... a crab molting! and it appears to be not a very nice crab, had some very sharp pointy claws and body shape is almost that of a stone crab, any advice at all on how to catch this bugger would be great! Ive searched the tank and as of now im frustrated at not being to find him anywhere...
Please help... |

you can stand a glass up against the LR and put some bait in it and hopefully he will drop in and not be able to climb out.

Does he really need to be removed? I feel like most things that turn up in the tank are harmless and possibly beneficial. I love finding random creatures living in the tank, and watching my crabs. Then again, it has the possibility of being a reef destroying crab. Doubtful.
If he's molting he's obviously healthy and feeding on something, perhaps keeping detritus or algae down. Save the crab!

I think im going to try that waterbottle method, I'd like to at least catch the crab so i can identify it as friend or foe, and that will decide his fate, friend can of course keep living happily, and it seems all my crustacians are happy campers, my dwarf hermits are non stop molting along with my shrimp, if i do catch the little bugger I'll try to get a pic of him and post, Im sure to need help with the identity of him, If he is foe think i could put him in the back of my tank?

I've got one last gorilla crab that has been in my 90g for over 3 years... he's a smart bugger and has evaded all attempts at trapping, snaring, skewering, etc.
Guess he knows if he ever does fall for the traps, he'll become one of Pookie's dinner guests like his previous brethren.

So my little crab friend is rather elusive and I still have not seen anything of him but his molt, the little bugger is a good hider, I tried the water bottle trap and alas... only caught my shrimp and he looked ever so sad almost like he was pouting, he was very happy when I set him free and he seemed to look at me with a gratitude of thanks, my shrimp so loves me, but I think if I got myself a pet mantis shrimp (which I really want in its own tank of course) My nice happy little shrimp would look at me with total disgust and possibly be terribly dissapointed in me and may even disown me, Oh woa is me.. whatever shall I do

haha... Well that crab may just be a little more insane than my cleaner shrimp... Not that they are competing, as far as I know.

I dont know about any competition in my tank as of yet, but tonight as I watched the same lame shows and old reruns I noticed a shadow, not just any shadow but i do think it may have been the shadow of the ever elusive Eek the Crab, Lurking in dark places, I fear he may trying to intimidate the Happy little reef dwellers of Bubble Coral City, stearing clear from the North side of town due to the sparkling water bottle condo that everyone finds so appealing.... He hides.... He waits.... as for what its still unclear, Im sure he will emerge in his own good time and when Eek does Im sure he will be there to lay down the pimp hand, Until then I shall continue to stalk Bubble Coral City with my handy dandy flashlight with hopes that I may finally catch more than a quick glimpse of shadow, I shall keep posting in the meanwhile and maybe eventually hire the thug Brutus to take the upper hand if the situation rises to a dangerous level

Just setup a 20g Long tank a few weeks back and found a large black crab in there. Had to take out the piece of LR he was on and dig him out of a cave. Tried everything else. He was a def. pain in the ***...
