Their relatively sedentary nature not withstanding, nurse sharks get REALLY big....I didn't think people still imported/sold them.

I agree with the whole... leave the sharks to the wild. I can understand keeping them in a educational setting, like a large aquarium such as the Monteray Bay Aquarium or the Atlanta joint, but private party... seems like people get sharks for much the same reason they get wolves or rattlesnakes... the show off factor vs. conservation/education. I can understand having a dedicated shark tank, something big and well equipped, but the sale of shark egg cases is just gross.
And yes, nurse sharks do hit a pretty respectable size. Any shark at all in a 125.... bleah. Sick. There's a guy in my area selling a 180 with the advertisement "Would make a great shark tank" and it just makes me want to puke every time I see it. Far from being a member of the tang police, or shark police for that matter, I just don't like seeing stupidity. |

I thought they were only illegal to keep in California? Might be wrong but I remember reading something on them awhile back.

Well illegal to keep or not, it's against Ebay rules to sell live animals.
I reported the auction to Ebay.

Live Animals: Other than the exceptions noted here, eBay does not allow sales of live animals or pets on eBay. eBay allows sales of tropical fish and domestic (i.e. not exotic) aquatic snails, provided the seller has the proper Federal (APHIS PPQ) - see Form 526 info below) and/or State permit(s) that allows for movement across State lines (and/or for importation into the U. S.), and provided that the seller guarantees in the listing that the animals will be packaged safely, and shipped via next day delivery.
But regardless, leave the sharks alone. Small sharks in huge systems are one thing, but a nurse in a 125g is totally unacceptable.

Ebay either agrees with the rest of us, or they are investigating to see if he is licensed, because the auction was pulled less than two hours after I alerted them to it. I guess we'll have to wait and see if it reappears to know if he has the proper permits. (And, I would guess that's probably a negative since he just seems to be a regular hobbiest and not a business.)

Horned sharks, Nurse sharks, cat sharks, etc, are all legal to keep in CA. Now AZ (IIRC) has banned all shark keeping.

that nurse shark is in a 125G, instead of shooting him an email to tell him the facts, you go and rat him out. So now, since you got his listing pulled, he probably wont sell that shark and it will rot away in his 125G nice job, real nice ![]() oh look, another live animal on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/Live-Coral-Saltw...QQcmdZViewItem Last edited by Reefinator; 03/25/2007 at 11:21 AM. |

Oh yeah, and it's better, I suppose, that the guy sell it on ebay? Oh wait, that means he can sell more and get away with it. Great idea.
Since when is having people follow rules that are in place for a reason, ratting them out? Where are we, prison? Please... And angel, you're what, dissing neighborhood watch programs? ![]() ![]()

There is no guarantee that whoever purchased that shark would have been a responsible caregiver. The responsibility to care for that shark is whomever owns it. Anybody could have bought that thing!
