Seaweed from supermarket
Just wondering if I could buy dried seaweed and nori from the supermarket to feed my fish? It is much cheaper that the ones from LFS. Anyone ever used seaweed for cooking to feed the fish?

Yes, it's fine. I use nori from our Supermarket and have no problems with it. The fish love it too.

Wow, I never would have guessed. I can't say I've ever look for it in the supermarket. If it's a lot cheaper then that is awesome.
Where do you look for it?

Thanks, I will have to give it a try. Any prep that you know of before introducing it into the tank?

I use the supermarket kind - I just put it under a rock, no prep - My tang looks like a frenzied shark when I put it in.

Also see if you can get those flying fish eggs. Make sure they're not pickled or salted. Fish love these.

Yep, it is fine to use, and usually cheaper. Just make sure it is not salted or seasoned.

The best place I've found is your local asian market. I've found 100 sheets of Nori, twice as big as the LFS brands, for less than 10 bucks.

Go to some chinese supermarket. Find lots of seaweed, nori etc. with much much much cheaper price than the one in the petstores.

at my LAM (Local Asian Market ) 100 sheets of nori is under $5. They also have several other kinds of algae/seaweed that I have also tried. Some of them they ate, some they didn't. It's great to experiment with these considering they are only $1 per package. I would love to tell you guys what types they liked but.... all the writing is in Chinese or Japanese...
The flying fish eggs are used in many types of Sushi. This makes them readily available at your LAM (hehe). They are small enough for some corals to eat yet large enough for your fish to be able to see them and eat them. Also they are very colorful, don't know if that transfers to the fish/corals or not but it can't hurt....

Hey guys! That is great! How much it will cause in LFS, say, the 40 sheet package? Chinese often use it for soup! It is delicious and healthy!

It's a form of processed seaweed that's easy to handle and attach to a clip to feed omnivorious and herbivorious (sp) fish like Tangs, Triggers, puffers... etc.
It's most commonly used as a wrapper for the popular 'California Roll'. A type of Sushi.
