Talking Craziest things you see people do with their tanks...

I just cut out and replaced the center brace of my 65G while full and after, I was thinking about how bad it could have gone if I had done it wrong (ie. not clamped the tank while cutting it out). But THEN I started thinking about other people I know who cut them out and never replace them...I seem to know a lot of people like that. Maybe one person in a community does it and recommends it to everyone...

Anyways, just wondering what you guys see people do that seems crazy?

I guess mine is my one friend who cut out and NEVER replaced the center brace on his 90G which is not on a proper tank stand but a huge trunk...Disaster waiting to happen! (although somehow he has survived 2 years now like that)

The craziest thing that I have heard of someone doing to their tank was peeing in it to start a Nitrate cycle. Though crazy...It makes sense

magdelan i was gonna post the same thing! although it seems crazy... well it still is. it makes no sense if you know a bit about pee.

fish pee ammonia. that starts a cycle. (note: never cycle with live fish... use a frozen uncooked shrimp. easier and ethical.)

people pee urine. which has no ammonia because it is chemically packaged as urea. a cycle cant start on this material.

okay since my original was stolen (grrrrr) here's another: put a mantis in a reef tank on purpose (btw, that was me and i love my mantis reef).

actually urine contains ammonia nitrogen. When bacteria break it down it forms ammonia. It still cycles the tank.

But I would worry about other things in urine like hormones and heavy metals that the body has expired. Its pretty crazy.

OK, siphoning is gross, but that would take it to the next level of gross.

These are just some crazy things I seen happen, not just to one tank...
Asian guys buying up all the betta fish and using them for fighting purposes and my LFS is okay with that, then special ordering different varieties so they can see if they fight better
Another time I seen another asian guy ask for something, the lady went to check on it. Then he pulled out a ziploc baggy and tried to steal FW dwarf gourami's why she wasn't looking. He was caught standing on a stool, fishing out the fish from a tank above. He ran out of the store...

That's pretty crazy.

Well, people do "heat up" their compost piles that way. Any kind of urine gives a nitro burst.

I know that some of the original guys to aquaculture Tridacna clams used to pee in their holding tanks. How regularly this was done I don't know, but I know it happened.

Because its a 50/50 shot as to if its going to decide to rip apart some of your corals, pluck at sps polyps, ect.. Seems like a common and risky move to me.

Add caulerpa to a refugium that *can* get through a pump to the main tank.

I really think there are more important thing to worry about. Hormones would break down. There are more heavy metals in your fish food, salt, etc, than you'd ever add peeing in the tank.

We've had this poll about a dozen times, and eveyr time it comes out that dwarf angels are safe about 80% of the time. I dont know why people keep spouting this 50/50 crap.

Theyre no more risky than keeping tangs, blennies, large angels, foxfaces, or even emerald crabs, or any other grazer. ALL have the chance of becoming problems.
