LEDs and Global Warming

guess what? now MHs, T-5s and PCs cause global warming compared to LEDs.

Associated Press Release: lighting consumes 22% of eletricity produced in the U.S., according to the Department of Energy, and widespread use of LED lighting could could cut annual consumption in half. by 2010, LED lighting could cut annual energy use by the equivelent of 500 million barrels of oil, with the attendant reduction in emmisions of carbon dioxide, the gas believed to be responsible for global warming.

Nadarajah Narendran, diretor of lighting research @ Polybright:
"the cost of LED lighting should be coming down quickley. the cost of individual light diodes, which makes up most of the cost in the LED bulb have come down in price from a year ago of about $8.00 ea. to $1.50 ea. by the middle of next year they will be priced for consumers.
while LEDs demonstrate very high efficiency in the lab, when combined into fixtures, their efficieny is considerably lower. in part thats a heat issue: Diodes produce less heat than other artificial lighting rather keep in mind the heat stays in the fixture rather than radiating it, and the hotter Diodes get, the less efficient they are.
the one big advantage is the LEDs last up to 50,00 hrs. compared to PCs, MHs, and T-5s, which need replacement after every 10,000 hrs."

thanx, JDM

But who can afford them at this point. A 24" Solaris is like $1200. Yikes.

And besides. the only thing that is going to stop global warming is fusion reactions. China is about 15-20 years away from achieving Fusion and that day will mark the shift of all power on the planet. The U.S. will see the end of it's 15 minutes.

LEDs have been a great low-cost alternative for lighting, especially recently. I however, haven't seen any LEDs that produce the same quality of light as others.

nothing will stop global warming. or global cooling, for that matter. the climate has always been changing, it always will

LED's are the new CF. Expect it to replace those CF socket bulbs... and much more. They last for so long is the cool thing.

I agree, it is only a matter of time LED will be household items.

I'll help the world when companies decide to make things more affordable ... Hybrid cars are off the roof and Solaris LED's are freaking expensive. I'm a student and dont have that kind of money so as much as I want to help I cant.

No need to engage in a non-intelligible conversation regarding global warming... everyone has their views and will never be changed no matter what. That being said... has there been any testing of LED lights and the effects on corals?

****(Please - leave the conjecture regarding global warming to professionals, or at least forums specializing in such ludicrous debates)**** Everybody is an expert apparently, but let's try to keep the discussion to the venture of LED lighting possibilities

When the LED lights come down in price, I would love to have some. For now I have to stick with my T5's and MH's.

Having a high output light, with even distribution, close to no heat output, a low running cost, and that only needs to be replaced every few years is every reefers dream no? I think they will be way popular one day and we will speak of PC's like we speak of UGF's now.

i don't see the price difference everyone is talking about on the led systems.

sure up front costs are a bit more, but mh bulbs are frickin' bank! and heat issues so you gotta get a chiller. the meter is def. spinning with that duo.

What sort of spectrum do these lights provide?

If you used the right kind of lights and pumps you will not need a chiller.Lights-175 watt Iwasaki 15000 K-Lumenarc mini,Pumps Tunze streams for water movement in the tank and used a Eheim for a return pump.Your ele bill will go down and so will heat in your reef tank.

I don't know the topic is about LED and GW, why can't people talking about it? If the moderator thinks it does not belong here then yes he can remove it.

I don't usually care about the debate, I have a sense now people all agree that GW exists (unlike a few years back people on one side just denied it), but they argue it is a natural cycle, not due to man's influence, or at least mankind is powerless when it comes to influencing mother nature.

Fair enough, but my question is, if this natural cycle will bring great harm to civilization, should we do something about it or do you still think we are powerless when it comes to mother nature?

When an led company wants to save the world and offer trade in on mh I will be the first in line. As long as they are 3 to 5 times more expensive to buy, it just can' t happen.

I guess eventually the electic company might do what the gas companys are doing. Try to force us to buy high efficent cars because we can't fill up our gas tanks for under $80.

My last gas bill for the house was $100. It is nearly summer. How could I have possibly used that much gas, oh yeah they jacked up the prices again.

This is one of those topics that turns into name calling etc. Keep it geared to LEDs and it will be ok, turn it political and it will be locked/removed.

I use florescent lighting in my room, i like it better than the other kind, what could cut global warming, turning lights off when not using them, using natural sun light in a room when available, i will still use MH on my aquarium because thats what it needs, but I'm not the only one that uses it, i still try and save electricity when ever possible.

I am just suprised that someone thinks China is going to be the first country with a stable fusion reactor...

um... they only did their first tokamak test last year...

France - (CERN) the US, Canada, Russia, and the UK have all run Tokomak reactors for decades, the first one was operational in 1975, thats 32 years of a head start...

China will make up ground quickly, but if were gonna put money on who's going to do it first... CERN.. without a doubt.

thats fine, I would rather let them spend the money to develop it and us just buy it from them anyhow. our money would be more responsibly spent developing better fission reactors.

as far as LED's go, they are the future, and once price comes down, they will be all over the place. in fact, I think I have bought my last set of halide fixtures and ballasts, i won't re-invest again until a unit like the solaris is available and fiscally responsible choice.

why dont the people who think the oil companies are trying to downplay global warming ever consider that "eco-freindly" companies are trying to exagerate it?

i have a 48"solaris. i keep SPS, softies, and a corcea clam, and everything has been doing fine. the softies grow fast and the SPS slow, but at comparable rates that i couldnt contribute for or against the solaris. it works better than my PC's, but ive never owned halides.

also no one is close to controlled fusion reactions that could be used for commercial energy.

the US and china are "teaming up" to build a new test reactor in 2015 or so, their goal is to get stable fusion reactions for 5 minutes. just to test to see if its possible. i still dont quite get how its possible since it needs to be millions of degrees, anyone know anything about how magnetic bottles work?

Guys, MH are still much more EFFICIENT than the consumer available LEDS. Yeah, thats right.

LEDS are the future, but the future isnt here yet.

The LEDS that these 'high end' fixtures use need to get about twice as efficient before theyre actually a savings.

That sounded crazy enough but this is true, if the current trend continues, China will one day over take the US as the world economic powerhouse, and maybe even in military power further down the road.

One thing good going with them is the government can do whatever it sees fit, and so far they have not made any big missteps in handling the economic development, the one thing against them is if the government shall make some big missteps there will be no opposition to resist it so it can be very bad.

Now back to LED, I think this hobby may be the one to finally bring this technology to the general population much like porn industry is always credited for the advancement of VHS, DVD, high speed internet and now HDTV

when i was lookign at prices for lgihts for my 48" tank it was going to cost me about 900-1150 for a nice halide combo unit that would look as nice and compact as the solaris, i would have also needed a chiller which i think for my size tank was going to be 350-450. so thats around 1250-1600 plus shipping. i got my solaris for 2000 exactly including shipping. so after the power draw difference, the heat difference, the incredibly small chance of fire with halides ( or fish ruinging bulbs with splashing, the fact that i dotn have to change a thing on my tank for 5 years or so, and the light controller for sunrise/sunset and the lunar cycle, t was worth it to me. (plus its a new toy that no one else has, and im a guy)
