How to fix broken acrylic.

Is it OK to PVC cement an acrylic crack at the top of a wet/dry filter. It is a very small leak, but enough to show water on the floor overnight. It is way above the water line.
I suppose I could go buy some acrylic cement, and a piece of acrylic.
Or I could buy a piece of plexiglas with some plexiglas cement to do the job.
To me the plexiglas option is the best one. (Cost-effectiveness)
What are your thoughts on the idea?
I'm sure acrylic cement, and a piece of acrylic patch are the way to go, but it is probably more expensive than the plexiglas route.
Or I could totally cheap out, and use PVC cement alone, or maybe with a flat piece of plastic.
