A question regarding Euro-Reef Skimmer capacity
I am upgrading my system from a 60 gal to a 120 gallon SPS reef .I have a Euro-Reef CS 6-1 which was skimming my 60 gal (I always new I would get a bigger tank) and planned to use it to skim my 120 gal for a year or so until I could get a bigger i.e. higher bio load capacity skimmer.
I erroneously believed that the CS 6-1 was rated for a 120 gal but in checking found out that it was rated for a 100 gallon. Here’s my question – I know that the Euro-Reefs are rated conservatively but do you believe that the CS6-1 can handle a 120 gallon SPS tank with a medium - high bio load for a while or is it time to buy a new skimmer right away? Any insight would be appreciated . Thanks |

I would buy the new skimmer right away or do more water changes to compensate. I am a firm believer in a large protein skimmer on SPS tanks and use an H&S 200-1260 on my 110.

If it were a moderately low bioload, you'd probably be fine. But with a medium to heavy stocking, you really will need to either get the bigger skimmer first or at least buy a decent second skimmer to help out the ER while you save up for the big new skimmer. That said, you could maybe make a go of it if you're really really careful about not feeding too much and controlling nutrient import/export as best you can. Whatever your choice is, I'm sure you'll make things work with the upgrade to the bigger tank.

The capacity of my H&S is 300 gallons and get some good skimmate out of my 110.

Turbo & Schenjit Thanks for the input.
I think I like the idea of using a second skimmer to help out until I can save for a really good one. At least I know I definitely need one ASAP Do you foresee any problems of using 2 skimmers in the sump.? Thanks |

I have one of approx the same dimensions under a 55 with approx a 20 gal sump.
I would be hard pressed to sell the one you have unless you think you can get enough out of it to make it worth while getting a bigger one. I made the skimmer I'm running. Here's a link to it if you're interested: http://randystacye.com/diy_needle_wheel_skimmer.htm Making one would sure save some $$$$. It is actually very easy to make one of these. If you’re interested, I can show an easy way to make one with a 3” neck. It takes a miter saw to do it though. |

Thanks everyone! Randy nice link however I believe your are MUCH more handy than I am!
Since footprint is a big issue I think I will just buy a Tunze DOC 9010 skimmer and use it with the euro-reef. I don't know how I'll pay for it after Xmas spending but where there's a will there's a way (at least I would like to believe so)!!!! |

I wouldnt buy a new skimmer.
Go into the DIY forum, and look at the" Meshwheel kicks but on GenX4100" thread. Its a 10 minute modification, and your skimmer should be able to pull twice as much air. It'll probably be able to handle your new tank.
