dead plenum?

I do believe my plenum is dying. It is stating to show large black and gray areas. What can I do? I was thinking of ordering some live sand activator from GARF. But am also looking at getting ride of plenum. It is 22 months old and I have had no problems with Nitrates or Phosphates with it set up. I had 4 golden Headed gobies for 18 months before they passes. The plenum is in a 135 gal and the plenum covers 2/3 of tank. ANY suggestions?

I didn't know people still used plenums. I would use a tube to siphon out as much dead sandbed as possible, careful not to stir it up too much, and pull that thing out of there. Just my opinion from personal experiences. Others may tell you different.
