BLACK SHRIMP...hitch hiker???...
I heard the taps and he's making a burrow, but he hasn't killed anything yet. None of my fish disappeared..."yet?"
I'm thinking it's a mantis shrimp, but I'm not sure as I never had one before. It did however cut my finger open when I moved his rock. What do you guys think?... Is my fish gonna start disappearing?... Should i get'm out?.... |

yea me too, but I'm not 100% sure so i don't want to squash it just yet.
I'm just waiting for someone with some mantis shrimp experience to confirm that my fish are gonna start disappearing first or see one actually go..."then I'll take action." He's not guilty of anything yet and I don't want to pre judge... |

I've heard and read all about the mantis, but I don't know for sure if this is one. The fact is that he hasn't killed anything yet and if he's peaceful (other than splitting my finger) I'll let him live in the tank.
How often do they kill a fish?...cause he's been in there at least two months and nothing happend yet...but then again is he too small to kill yet?..."he's about half the size of a pinky"... |

Take it out and put it in it's own tank. They are pretty cool shrimp with a lot of personallity. My neighbor had one that was cool as anything. I'm thinking of starting a 10gal tank for a Mantis.

Don't kill it, unless it's unavoidable. Mantis shrimp are intelligent, interesting pets in their own right -- just not something you necessarily want to leave in your reef. If you can get him out, there are lots of other RC members who would be happy to take him off your hands and give him a nice home (check out the mantis forum). I just discovered a tiny mantis in my reef and asked about getting him out unharmed, which will be challenging because I can't find exactly the rock he's in and I know he's in one of the bottom surpporting 6-10lb rocks so even if I pulled it out I might not find him. You could try cutting off and inverting the top of a soda bottle, then baiting the trap with scallop, fish, or shrimp meat. Sometimes you can catch hitchhiking inverts with a baited drinking glass set on a 45 degree angle against their rock, and someone recently suggested to me that an L shaped, capped piece of PVC can work well too.

I'm gonna leave'm in there until he does something stupid, then I'll go get'm and bring'm to the lfs...I have no use for a mantis. Not all mantis kill and eat fish, so hopefully he'll be a welcome guest.

I have three mantis shrimp who live in peace with my fish and other inverts/ they have never killed anything. My one lives with a cleaner shrimp, crabs, two clowns . I have a pic of him and a six line wrass sharing the same hole.

I agree with the let him be mentality till he proves himself a problem. Ive got on in its own tank thats a beast and will eat anything.... but he is my favorite pet, smart and cunning. Ive also seen a few nice reefs with a mantis that would occasionaly pick off a cleaning crew member but never really had a issue with killing fish. Hope he proves to be a good pet, If not im sure there are several people that will give him a great home on the mantis forum here.

Target feed him. Use a bamboo skewer with a bit of raw fish on it, and wave it near his burrow. Keep him fed and he will not hurt anything.
Forget to feed him....its lights out snails

I have a mantis shrimp that I want out of my tank. He has taken out a cleaner shrimp and 2 peppermint shrimp. He is about 2.5 inches. I have had an ongoing battle with Smeegle, but he is the most intelligent creature I have seen. I have set two traps that have caught everything but him.
I tried the whole "put his rock in fresh water to draw him out" tactic and he just moves to a different rock. My tank is about about 15 feet from my office and I can hear him clicking his choppers. However, he has not killed any of my fish.....yet. The minute one goes MIA, I will take every piece of rock out of my tank to get rid of him. Actually, I will probably put him in my fuge until I figure out what to do with him. If you want to get rid of him, stay away from the Xterminator trap. Build your own using the 20 oz pepsi bottle. More effective and cheaper... I caught everything in my tank but the damn shrimp. Good luck |
