what size system are you skimming for? what other equipment will you be using? if its for a 500 gallon system, $1000 for a skimmer would be getting off pretty cheap imho

yea it's for my 500 gallon system I'm going to be running 2 skimmers. (not going to throw away the g3 when I get something new). The display is 225g...the rest is sump and equip tanks.

Skimmer off? ATi, ASM,EURO, H&S, Octopus

Soo.. I'm trying to pick a second skimmer for my tank approx 500gallon SPS.. and it seems that there are alot of skimmers all claiming to be great around the same price range. So I'm looking for thoughts on which is the way to go (please note rough prices not ACTUAL price)

ATI Bubble Master 250 - 750$
H&S 2001x3 - 1100$
Euro Reef Recir - 850$
ASM G6 - 550$ (anothoer 100$ in mods)
Octopus 3xRecirc - 800$

Now i'm reading a TON of great stuff about all these skimmers except the G6 and I haven't read much about the Octopus..but from what I understand a quick afternoon and a couple bucks on mods and the g6 will hold it's own..

The ATI seems to have picked up alot of steam as a Cheap Bubble King knock off, while the H&S seem to be the skimmer of choice for those who are just fed up with trying to find the perfect skimmer haha..

SOo.. What do you all think? Which is gonna give me the most bang for my buck?!

I just installed this guy over the weekend.

It's a custom GEO needle wheel with the Sequence Dart pump as the recirc. 48" tall, 12" diam.

You should see it all put together and installed

That picture doesn't do it justice. The reaction chamber isn't aligned, the drain pipe isn't connected to the holder, the air pipe is all crooked.. But it's one HECK of a skimmer.

I might be next in line to get mine!! The wait since June 2005 is almost over Seriously, I am getting close to getting a 1000g system going and I think Geo's products are second to none.

Which air pump are you using? How about which pump to feed the skimmer and your total gallonage?

Thanks.

That skimmer is using a recirculating Sequence Dart needlewheel pump.

I have the SweetWater SL24 air pump driving it. For 9 watts you can't go wrong! I'm not exactly sure if it can take more air or not. It seems to be pretty darn close to a perfect skimmer right now.

I've only got 700 or so gallons right now, but it's enough. I figured i might as well over skim than under I'm feeding it with a mag 7 right now at full blast and I think it might be a bit too much. I'm going to valve that down tonight and see how it performs for the next couple of days.

My main reason for this skimmer was two fold. One heat. I had an internal GEO skimmer using two sedra 9000's. It wasn't that noticable, but my opinion is every internal pump is putting heat in the water. Second, energy. These dart pumps are great. ~120 or so watts on that and 9 watts on an airpump. Compaired to 2 sedra 9000's, that's a savings of 50 watts.. Not a ton, but every bit adds up.

And third, GEO rocks! I'd have him build everything I own if I had the money. No better product for the price.

-Rob

Re: Skimmer off? ATi, ASM,EURO, H&S, Octopus

Since you want -bang for my buck- I would suggest looking at the skimmers at a comparable price. If $1100 is your max why not compare various $1100 skimmers vs $550-1100 skimmers.

Look at the physical size of the reaction chamber (I would think you would want 12 in dia skimmer) & also the specs on the pumps at the price point.

I wouldn't compare the mfg suggested tank numbers especially with the lower end models like ASM, Octopus because they are usually very inflated.

Tacoking,

It is all heresy unless we see pix of the beast in action.

GEO is like a fine wine...

Look at it this way. All the skimmers $1000 and above are very good (top tier).

When was the last time you saw a thread where someone was downgrading their BK, H&S, or Deltec for middle or bottom tier?

Because cost doesn't always dictate quality. Take for example the ATI-BM 250 for 750 how it compare to the 1100 H&S?

I have a H&S A200 3xF2001 and a BM250 and I would say the H&S outskims the BM almost 2 to 1 and I feed the tank with the BM more, but the tank does have 100lbs more live rock. I hope that when I finally get the part to control the level I will get more skimmate from the BM but as of now if I were to do it again I would have gotten another H&S.

Correct, many times you are paying for better quality in the craftmanship & better materials which might or might not mean better performance.

Which is why I looked at the specs of the products & not just prices.

It's also why I did not consider some of the top manufacturers & settled on a used ER because I was able to get a much larger/better skimmer going this route then buying new. I snagged a skimmer 3+ years ago which has a 12 in body & is rated for a stocked 500g for under $800

One just sold on this site for $300

Some will never understand the power of the H&S. Unfortunately, you have to own one to appreciate it.

The ATi with the gate valve mod is impressive. I almost purchased one, two reasons kept me from pulling the trigger.

1. Track record
2. Sump only model (will change soon)
