WTB mangrove/red mangrove for fuge
Any recomendations. To what extent this is a legal practice i dunno, wat i do know is that it will improve the filtration naturally in my sump/fuge.

mangroves are not the easiest or best filtration devise for our systems. You would be better with micro algae's

Just keep in mind, they don't grow fast enough to be a useful nitrate export. Also, as I understand it, they tend to soak up magnesium.

mangroves
are apparently extremely efficient at taking up waste from the water and are a great filter medium. Mangroves absorb nutrients from the water in order to grow, and help lower nitrates and phosphates in the aquarium.

but not at the rate that you think. simply compare the growth rate of macroalgae like chaeto and the growth of mangrove. In a mangrove forest where there are millions of plants i agree that they do absorb a lot of nutrients.

That has got to be the cleanest fuge I've ever seen... by any chance are you related to Martha Stewart, Gasman?
Btw, if you don't mind my asking, where did you get the mangrove and how much was it? Big Al's had some pods for about $13 apiece. |

I'm not certain looking at the pics, but I think you have the leaves underwater? One of the keys to mangroves living in salt/brackish water is that they excrete salt through their leaves. I'm not sure how they'll do submerged.
