Chaeto. Algae in Main tank, good or bad?
Hey all,
I don't have a sump but I would like to get the benefits of chaeto. It's it possible to grow it in the main tank/display tank? Will it get messy? any negative impact on the fish? Thanks for the help |

It will not go sexual like other Macros but it does break very easily and could possibly grow in places you do not want it to. Also, It may not be very pretty in the main display since it just floats around.

Yes it is possible to grow it in the main display. I have been growing it in my display for some time. And yes, it is messy. It gets everywhere and you'll need to prune it alot and watch your overflows, clean those a few times a week. I'm about to start up a refugium just because I don't like it in the main display, however I never removed all of it because I liked the benefits of it. I've never had a problem with hair algae.

I've seen some nice algae setups in main tanks, often they add a unique look provided they are kept up. Feather calurpa looks nicer than cheato.. and Halmeda is probably the nicest in a display tank but nothing beats Cheato for not going sexual on you.
