Questions regarding the Aqua C Remora Pro Skimmer????? Please Help
My skimmer stinks!!!!
I skimped on the skimmer and got a Seaclone, so now I am not skimping. I learned my lesson.....a very hard way with a very wet floor Anyway, I have looked into 2 skimemrs today, teh Coralife Super Skimmer, and the Aqua C Remora Pro. I know a ton of people on RC like the Remora and that is the one I am leaning towards getting, but I really want to know a few things: What do you like about the Remora Pro in comparison to other skimmers? What don't you like about the Remora Pro in comparison to other skimmers? Are there ever any problems I need to worry about regarding the O-ring around the cup? How easy is the Remora to use in comparson to other skimmers (like the Super Skimmer)? Sorry, I know it's a lot of questions, but I want to make sure I buy the right skimmer. I'm a bit concerned b/c a buddy of mine (mnestroy here at RC) has a Remora and I know he hates it. Last question, I promise, anyone know of a quality place with decently fast shipping that I can get a Remora Pro online? Thanks for taking the time to read this and answer my buttload of questions Steve |

Remora is very easy to operate-- nothing to tweak (just clean the riser and cup a couple times a week)-- the O-ring only sets the height of the collection cup which will determine how wet or dry you skim... I've never used the Aqua C Remora but have used the Aqua C Urchin (the sump version)...
I've read good things about the CSS-- I would use the 125 for your tank (75 gallon)-- but have never used it... I have read it takes a bit to dial it in but from what I've read it should be cheaper and out skim the Remora.... Once again... I haven't used it... perhaps someone who has used both will chime in... I bought my Urchin and other stuff from marinedepot-- I like them alot... the pro is expensive enough that you will get free shipping... although if you can get it cheaper somewhere the free shipping may be a moot point.

I think the biggest thing u'll hear about the remora hang on the back skimmers is how inconsistantly they are built, and perform.
I was told they are hand made, so each skimmer performs differnt. Read the forums and u'll see 100 people who 'love' their Remoras and 100 who 'hate' them. I think this alone is their biggest downfal. They have excellent customer support, the units themself are extremely easy to setup, you don't have to worry about them flooding your carpet because if the collection cup gets to high the waste will just go back into he tank (not the ideal situation but better than a wet carpet). Another huge downside with the Remora skimmers is how they produce bubbles, unlike other skimmers they utilize a powerhead to blast water into a fine jet that in return makes bubbles.. This is a very loud way of doing it. The Remoras are very loud compared to other skimmers. Lastly, most people complain about the huge amount of micro bubbles these units put back into the tank. This can be reduce considerably by purchasing the prefilter box. The nice thing about the box is it covers up the pump too. In regards to the pump I recently upgraded my Mag 3 pump to a Mag 5 pump and have gotten much better performance, I've even read of people using a Mag 7 (sometimes with the purchase of a larger collection cup) |

But in all honesty, I can find 100 people who love their SeaClone (I'm not one of them), so what the heck should I do? I don't really like the bulkiness of the Super Skimmer.
The sleak design of The Remora is pretty nice. I would be using it has a HOB skimmer. I'm not getting as much advice as I thought I would. Heck, I was ready for the Remora love to just pour through!?!?!? Thanks for your insight Spuds. Does anyone who uses it have any feedback? I'm sure there are many out there who use one or the other. Any help anyone can offer me would be greatly appreciated.

I've used a Remora Pro, and switched to the CoraLife. I didn't like the physical design of the Pro (huge pump hanging on flexible tubing), and it didn't seem to skim very well. There's no objective data on skimmers, though.

What's the pre-filter box? No one has mentioned this to me yet? Where can I buy one?

I think the Remora Pro comes with a Mag 4 on it. Wouldn't that be just fine for what I need it to do?

the remora pro has a mag-3 standard. AquaC remora has a M-J 1200 standard. they are not loud, especially if you compare it to a Bac-Pack which drowns out a TV in the next room and they will dump into the floor. remora doesnt come with a larger collection cup, however it does have a 5/8" drain line (optional) the micro-bubbles you will get with almost every skimmer built, if you rinse it in warm water until the acrylic becomes warm it will reduce the MB's and in about a week or two at the most they will be gone. if you put a small sponge (from your LFS) in the output it will also help reduce them. have a great day!

I bought a Remora Pro Brand New off of Ebay with a Mag 3 pump. $227 all together and that includes shipping.
It seemed like $220 was the average price for a new one. Will I be happy? I sure hope so!

Got my Sea Clone 150 from LFS with my set up. Then read on RC about its lousy performance so got an Aqua C Remora from Marine Depot. I now run the both of them on my 65 reef and as far as I'm concerned neither one does the job I expected it to do. I get some foam which leaves a brownish deposit in the lift tube but little if any skimmate regardless of available adjustments. Right now I'm looking for a better HOB skimmer. Maybe I'll run all 3 and see what happens. I mean is it possible to over skim?

Depending on the tank, there might not be much to skim.
There's no objective data on skimmer performance. You could try a CoraLife. Mine removes more than the Remora Pro or BakPak skimmers removed, subjectively, but I don't know what that really means.

I have the AquaC Urchin, the in sump one, and really like it. It does a great job and is not loud at all with the maxijet that comes with it. Its nice and slim and small, and really pulls some decent gunk out.
