how fast do warning signs appear?

In general, about how long does it take to tell if a coral that you bought, is likely to do ok in your tank? If for instance you bring home an acropora of some type, will you know in 3 days if the tank is just not going to support it. Or can it look ok for a month or 2 (even though it does not like the environment) and then fail shortly thereafter? Or can you tell right away?

I know like in all things reef, no answer covers all situations, but like I said, "in general".

I hope you can understand what I am trying to get at?

Michael

There's no way of telling. Animals can decline in days or months.

Sometimes even a coral that looks ill-fated might come back to health with the proper care so I think it's almost impossoble to tell in most instances. But if you know your tank well enough I think you can get a feel for how most things will fair in your tank.

Things can go to the crapper pretty quick, and quite a while after getting it.

In my experience, a number of Acropora don't show much change/difference until a few weeks in the tank - and I've had an ocean-mariculture Acro RTN overnight after 4-5 weeks in the tank.

I have had a few stonies seem to show growth within a week or so in the tank - but generally IMO it takes weeks to months to be sure it's started to thrive.

I think after you start seeing new growth you are probably pretty safe. Especially with stonies.

Thanks all for your replys

MiddletonMark - What is RTN?

and one other thing if you know. I am a registered and supporting member here at RC but whenever I go to look at someones pictures (like now when I clicked on your gallery button), I can see all your pages of thumbnails, but when I try to click on one of them, I get a box that should have the pic in it but instead, I get a message that "ONLY REGISTERED MEMBERS CAN VIEW THE PICTURES" and then it asks me to either register (which I did years ago), or go ahead and register (which when I try it creates an sql error about duplicate login)

Do you know what's up with that?
This has been happening for a year or more.

Michael

I inherited a zoanthid rock that hadn't opened for at least two weeks in this guys tank. In the past couple of days, some of the polyps have started to show their faces in my tank, and it is making a complete turnaround.

RTN = Rapid Tissue Necrosis thie outside tissue matter just rots off the stoney body over a matter of hours.

Totally depressing to see a prize Blue Tort that has taken ages to grow out....

Your picture viewing problem... does this only happen on one computer?

Yes it happens with both of my machines. One is running xpHome and the other is running xpPro. Just a home network with a linksys router.

First I click on your gallery icon

which brings up this you are not registered screen (although I am already signed on and in fact used the search function to get here)

then I click the login link

Then I get this duplicate sql statement. Same thing if I try to the register link instead of the login link.

I have no clue

Michael

a wild guess but maybe that apostrophe mark is causing an issue. I am surprised the system would allow it in the first place. They are typcially disallowed in the special charactors coding.

Probably should contact the guys here and have them look into it for you.

Woodstock - please post that in the feedback forum - where the admin and other staff-wizards can assist.

While I'm a competent user of the system, I don't know the back end.

That said, PM me if you can't get it solved + I'll see how I can help

MiddletonMark -

Randall_James -

You guys are the ****s!

Thanks.....If I get it right I'll post again

Yeah, I wondered about the apostrophe as well but I figured if their code is cool with it in my userName then the rest of the site would be happy as a clam?

This is a very outdated, modified copy of vBB and so no telling what is or is not in the code about the apostrophe.

All newer versions explicitly disallow them (mysql does not like them very well) About the only special character vBB usually allows are dashes and underscores

update us when you find out
