Setting up QT tank
Would there be any benefit to putting a small piece of cured live rock in a QT tank? I have a piece that is about a pound or maybe a little less. Any point in putting this in the QT?

Help the cycle but you would have to remove it if you treat the tank with any meds.

Good point. But as long as I am just using it to QT new livestock I should be OK? I am thinking it will help cycle and also help filter.

I siphon water into the QT from the display tank, no cycle needed and the water is the same as the display tank, making the acclimation after QT much easier.

I tried that (siphoning water from main)yet the tank spiked ammonia real high (cycle?) and my hippo tang didnt make it.
I now am cycling the tank without fish. No guarantees in this hobby. :-(

Water holds very little cycle bacteria so putting display water in your QT has no cycle benefit. Put some type of bio media, sponge, etc in your sump or display for two weeks. It'll be seeded and ready for your QT.

One stage of the Ich live cycle is spent in the rocks. Don't put the rock from QT back into your tank.

Again, a sponge or bio media in your display sump is all you need.
