oxygen??????

I have 900 GPH in return as well as 435 GPH in powerheads in my 90 gallon. So that would be 14x turnover... I run a powerhead with the tube hooked to the top so it puts bubbles in the water for my fish. Is this necessary? Or am I just crazy in doing this? I does not help the looks of the display to have all those bubbles, but I am just concerned that the oxy...is not that good. Opinions????

I take that back, I have 16x turnover....

a good skimmer should oxygenate the water well, as well as the return from the overflow. Lower temps hold more oxygen too. I point my return on the surface to allow more oxygenation and cooling. This doesn't cause bubbles. Unless you have a really high bioload I would not worry too much, but I'm definitely not an expert on the subject.

Gas exchange occurs when the water meets with the air therefore it's important to move water at the surface to ensure adequate oxygen in the water. Your powerheads and overflow are essential for moving water in the tank, but it's at the surface where it's really important for oxygenation. Hope this helps. Oh, BTW, corals don't always like bubbles--it annoys them.

thanks awestruck. I stoped with the bubbles in the display and my zoa rock close to the powerhead finally opened after 2 days. I just thought my large population of pods were bothering it. In other opinions on my question?

If you really want to understand oxygen better, watch the Oxygen seminar on reefvideos.com. It's about an hour but there's some really interesting findings. IMO, air stones or bubblers are useless. Surface agitation is king for oxygenation.
