Will a Sea Hare survive in a barebottom tank?

I'd like to buy a sea hare to clean up a few patches of hair algae. I've noticed they burrow in the sand sometimes at the LFS. Will it survive without sand in the tank?

they will survive with out the sand however they do feed mainly on the nuisance algae. once the algae is gone there wont be anything for the sea hare to eat. i have heard many horror stories about when these things die they usually cause your tank to crash if you do not get it out in time. i know that one of the lfs here actually "rents" out a sea hare. it has been working really well for him. sea hare is huge! you might just buy the hare long enough to get rid of the algae and then take them back to get store credit if they will do that.
