DARK PURPLE algae?? What is it?

I posted something like this the other day, but didn't get a definate answer...

I have an algae that is dark purple, and is blanketing a few of my rocks and is in 5" round patches on my substrate... It has tiny bubbles thru out it...

What is it, and how do i get it gone??

By the way, the tank is about 2 months old, and it is a swim tank... All the levels are good...

Is it hard to turn around in it?
FYI: aquariums with live rock, fish only, and no live coral are commonly referred as FOWLR.
Back to the question. You are experiencing a cyanobacteria bloom, which can be attributed to poor water, low current, old light bulbs/wrong spectrum, overfeeding, or just not enough bio diversity to control it. Critters to control it include cerith and nerite snails, but ONLY if your tank is completely cycled. Also any "live sand" that you can add to your tank will help.

Sounds good!

The only issue with the snails is that i have a s&s puffer... The sand that is in the tank is live sand, but i can add more... I have fed a little less over the last few day, we'll see how that does... I do use tap water, but condition it everytime...

My bulbs are new, and there is good water flow...

Thank you so much for your knowledge!

Get a RO/DI unit even on ebay... its worth its weight in gold to the value of giving you clean water to start with. tap water has too much gunk in it besides chlorine/chloramine, TDS and other stuff to start with that will cause havoc in your tank, feed un-wanted alage excess nutrients that would cause them to bloom

wow cyano? I got something like that growing on some rocks in the back as well. I'll have to check it out.
I'll readily admit the water is less than optimal. But it is RO/DI. :P
