Majano Anemones
I got a really good deal on some really nice LR. The only problem is there appears to be some pest anem. I think Majano. I do not have anything in the tank as of yet except a bunch of LR. What is the best way to get rid of these?
I taped off the tank with black plastic bags for just about a week now and I took a peek this morning and the one I could see from the small hole I was looking it appeared to be fine. Will no light kill these? If so how long will it take? Any one have any other ideas on how to get rid of them all? Not sure how many there are. I found 6 pretty quickly and look more but could not find any more. But I have about 200lbs of LR in the tank so I could not see all of the rock. I know Joes Juice is an option but the ones I found are very small and i am sure there are some I don't see. I figured since the tank has no livestock this is my best chance to make sure they are all gone. |

Peppermint shrimp ate mine like they were going out of style. Mine were small too an I found that chasing them down with a syringe was a pain and a lot of effort. I don't know how many you have but the shrimp will help.

Peppermint shimp may help but are no guarantee. You can read all the threads on here to verify what I'm saying. Part of the problem is that many LFS sell shrimp as Pep's that are not true Pep's. They look a lot like them but don't go near the Aiptasia.
Plus, some Pep's just don't care for Aiptasia. Keeping it dark won't kill the Majano's. Yo would be better off IDing how many you have and nuking them with Joe's Juice. You may have to hit 'em a 2nd time.

I do know that Pep's are hit or miss, and I was hoping since teh tank was empty there would be an easy solution.
So the Majano's can live with out light? |

They'll shrink up and may even appear to be gone, but they're still there.

Dang that sucks. Guess I will just have to nuke them as I find them with Joe's.
Like usual in this hobby there is no easy way out. Still a good deal I got over 100lbs of LR for free. My boss had a leak on his tank and him and and his wife decided to take it down and they just gave me the rock. He is down to a 12G nano now I felt guilty and he need a stand for the nano so I bought one for him. So not exactly free $80 and a day helping him take down the tank. I can deal with the Majanos for that. |

Peppermint shrimps don't seem to eat them-Joes juice just stresses them into multiplying so you end up with more after a month or so. As the rock is not in a display system scrape every last bit of flesh off the L/R with a knife or screwdriver (make sure you get every last one) or failing that a Racoon Butterfly will eat them.

2 doses of Joe's Juice on my lone majano so far. Now, when it sees the syringe coming it opens it's mouth wide and flips me off with all of it's tentacles. Cheeky little bugger.

Try white vinegar instead. Works for me. BTW, cidar vinegar just makes them drunk.

I took the manual approach. I pulled ea rock inspected closely and scraped with a blade and whipped clean with a paper towel. I will keep an eye on the rock in the tank to see if I spot any more or if they grow back.
I not even sure if these where Majano they looked like mini RTBA's. Red outside and white denials. |

I smoked one last week with Kalk powder mixed with a little water in a 1 ml syringe that came with a test kit for calcium. Killed it fast.

I have tried joes juice, boiling the end of the rock, but they all come back(with reinforcements). I bought a pep shrimp and have not seen one for weeks now. I guess I'm just lucky. but like someone else said joes juice just seems to **** them off.

Why kill them? I have had a couple for several months now. They too came as hitch-hikers. I have read that they supposedly spreadlike wild fire, but have yet to see any multiply.
