bio balls or no bio balls
i am doing a reef tank i dont know wether to do bio balls or not

From everyone’s advise on here I’m currently slowly swapping out my bio balls for base rock rumble in my sump tower. Since you are researching 1st (unlike me) you can skip this process and just use rock rubble

No bio balls.
They just become a source of nitrates which you don't want as they will feed problem algae. |

Making your own sump is very easy, cost effective, and you'll end up with something better than what anyone sells IMO. Check out http://www.melevsreef.com/allmysumps.html.
Basically they're made from a regular fish tank, but with plexiglass baffles that are silconed in place.
