tattooed fish

Since mollies can be kept in saltwater it's not really off topic

but this amazing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsKWu3qPQro

It's already been imported to US... and it's legal according to RSPCA.

Hi thornbury,

it's a very cruel and dangerous process, as explained in this article:

http://www.practicalfishkeeping.co.u...?article_id=72

Imagine being involuntarily injected with dye by a pencil-width needle without an anaesthetic? If someone were doing it to kittens for example, there'd be outrage (and rightfully so). Also, it's only legal to import the fish into the UK, It's illegal to carry out the process in the country.

Hi hulley,

I don't really think it's a matter of 'like' or 'don't like', it's a matter of empathy. I don't like baboons much but I would hate for them to be needlessly tortured like this. Cruelty is cruelty whatever the animal - imagine if it were you!

That was my poor attempt at being funny. I'm not a fan at hurting any animals. I really dont like cats, but I dont want harm done to them! or any animal for that matter.

Tattooed fish- that really is disturbed. The next thing you know they'll have fish with body piercings.

The "inventors" should be tied down and injected with this crap, see how they like it.

When a little 5 year old girl goes to the pet shop with her mom this sort of thing catches her eye and she says"mommy mommy i want this one" and then the pet shop owners and the people tattooing are all making MONEY which is what runs every thing in this world we live in. its cruel but as long as it is selling their not going to stop.

Very true aaron112977, but would the little girl and her mother still want to buy the fish if they knew what had happened to it? Perhaps they wouldn't care, many people don't. In China they boil cats and dogs alive for their fur, which they then sell all around the world. Do people buy them? Of course. But perhaps they wouldn't if they knew what had happened. Therefore the only thing we can do is educate people so they can make informed choices. But whether they make ethical choices is up to them.

Hi all,

This happened a lot to chicks/ juvenile birds being sold to attract children... and RSPCA has branded them illegal. And according to CNN, RSPCA has looked into these fish and they said nothing wrong with it.

Personally, I don't like these fishes and don't support them. I don't think it's natural, the colors, btw are terrible. But I don't think the "tattooing" process really uses a needle... there's gotta be a way they do without harming these fishes... because I don't think fish can overcome pain like land animals might... esp little fish like mollies which durability is very low...

That said, I don't support it at all... they were beautiful without the tattoos.

It's true what you say thornbury, their durability to such a procedure is low, I understand that many of them die during the process. Also, I doubt the die is harmless either, so they probably die from poisoning within a lttle while.

The video looks like it is in Thailand. 50 Baht under USD $2, not expensive but not cheap either by their local standard.

I know it's subjective but I think I still prefer my occelaris clown, which is not exactly my best looking fish IMO.

I'm surprised that they didn't have one with a "Nemo" on it.

They do tatoo puppies with ID tags.

I wouldn't buy one but am not that offended by it either. Hoping they use some kind of anesthetic but even so. Maybe a $10.00 fish with a pink heart on it has a better chance of being taken care of by the purchaser than it's unadorned $2.00 counterpart. Unless it dies from infection it may have a better life expectancy than most mollies sold as feeder fish or to cycle new tanks and then discarded.

It's definitely directed at children wanting these fish. When my 4 year old seen a clip on CNN about it, she said "I want that fish with the heart on it!"

Though I don't agree with it, without a law banning such procedures, children will want these fish and we will be seeing them more and more.

I was going to bring up this subject a while back when I seen some FW fish tattooed with hearts, and 'I Love You' on their side at a LFS. I don't remember what kind they were, but, I do remember the worker at the store being all excited to tell us about them... needless to say, that was the first and only time we were in the store.. that and they didn't sell salt water stuff,, thank goodness!!!

Doesn't surprise me that the video is from Thailand. If you've ever been to Chatuchak weekend market in Bangkok you've probably seen some crazy things as far as animals go. The cutest thing I've ever seen is a bunch of tiny little rabbits dressed in sweater vests hopping around. Not so cute though when you take into consideration that it's 90 degrees out with 100% humidity.

I have numerous tattoos and I can assure you that the needle is not the width of a pencil.

IMO fish have no nerves. I gutted a trout 2 weeks ago about 5 mins after catching it and it was still huffing and puffing for about 10 minutes after I took all his guts out.
