hd sand

Hello, i am currently setting up a new tank was going to go with a 2-3 inch sb. I do not want to spend $80 on argonite sand. My HD or Lowes only has some quick qrete. Anybody ever use this for more than a year or so without any probs? Read something where it said argonite sand does not actually buffer or do anything unless ph drops really really low/ how true is this? lol does it help ph calc and etc? if it does mabye it is worth the $80.
