Eheim 2026

Can this be used as just an added filter with the tank...Sump of course already being included. Could it possibly help with algae growth?

Is it a canister filter? If so, it's useful for running carbon and phosphate media. If used as a biological filter, it might cause higher nitrate levels, so I'd avoid that for a reef tank.

I agree. I run an Eheim 2028 on mine with Seachem's carbon and phosphate media. It works well and you can run it with a sump but make sure you take out any biological media because of nitrates and you'll have to clean it out regularly - mine accumulates dirt pretty quickly.

if you just get a few media bags and put some phosban or carbon in those compartments that works really well in place of an upflow reactor. you can also run the rough cleaning pads if you're willing to clean them regularly of large particles...

Is this a good replacement?...There are two trays in the Ehiem and one tray already holds this type of media.

i would probably stay away from that biological filter type material. it can (at times) act as a nitrate factory (so i've heard.) i'd stick more to the carbon, and if needed phosphate removal material. you don't need to have every chamber filled up either. i've got a Fluval 404, and am using carbon and phosban in one tray, and a polishing pad in another tray. 2 are empty. take all advice with a grain of salt though... this is just what i've heard/read in the past... Good luck!

The carbon and phosphate media might need to be put into filter bags, which are easy to get. I use Black Diamond or SeaChem Matrix carbon, and Salifert Phosphate Killer. Lots of online vendors stock those and similar products.
