Naso Tang in a 90g cruel?

I came REAL close to buying a Naso Tang today but I figured it would be smart to ask here before I took the plunge.

It was 5" long, VERY fat and eating like a pig.

These guys get way too big for a 90g. You did the right thing by not getting it.

Yeah, I asked the guy about how big they get. He said in a smaller tank they would not reach full size.

Is there some truth to this?

Yes, you did the right thing. These fishes get 18+ inch or so long and need a 6' tank at the minimum.

They don't reach full size in a smaller tank because somebody was so crual to cramp them in there. Just IMO.

Not to mention, a 5" Naso will put a HUGE addition on your bioload! I love Naso's too but just took mine to the LFS after 2 years as it had grown over 2 inches in that time and just looked miserable in my 92G.

That would be ok cause I have zero bioload at the moment. lol

And bare bottom tanks can usually handle a higher BL anyways.

You could probably get a tomini, kole, or a yellow. The only reason a fish wouldnt reach it's full size in a small tank, is because it would die before it had the chance to grow. You really did do the right thing by researching before buying.

Powder Brown's are great. Just be sure to quarantine him at least 2-3 weeks before putting him in your display tank as they are very ich prone when you first get them.

I was told they are a little more difficult to keep than some of the other Tangs out there. Nice fish and I agree with the quarantining him. I did this with all my Tangs for three weeks to be on the safe side.

PBT would work, just keep it as the only tang. They get aggressive as they mature. To add to the list above you could put a purple tang in there too. Stay away from the tangs that get bigger than 9-10 inches long, and even then you would only be safe with one if you wanna keep it to maturity. Tangs are beautiful fish, but love to swim. And there are alot of strong opinions about them on here. Good luck if you get a powder brown tang, they are beautiful fish.

Michael

It kind of depends on how big the tang is.

I have a Powder Brown; beautiful fish! Supposedly, they are less aggressive than Powder Blues and easier to keep. So far, I agree with this. Model citizen and eats a variety of foods.

I have had a purple tang in my 90g for almost a year and he's been great. No Ich, eats like a hog, constantly swimming.

That said, I do have tons of free space, and TONS of flow, so the fish gets PLENTY of exercise.

Here is a shot from last july (hes on the right side near the rabbitfish): http://www.d3f.org/misc/fish/90g/86-full-tank-REDO.jpg

juvenile chevrons are beautiful, but they are very expensive ($100), and I have yet to find one in a store that is eating.

Also, when they become adults, they look very similiar to Kole tangs.
