How deep to make a sand bed?

I am upgrading to a 72 gal. I want to know how deep of a sand bed I should go with?
I talk to a guy & he said either go with 1 inch or 6 inches.
Currently in my 29 I have 4 inches SB.

What are your thoughts?

Well for a functioning DSB it should be 4''-6'' or for aesthetics 1 inch is good.

That thread has some notes on substrate choices that I wrote a while ago.

Could I get away with 6inches in my refugium & only 1inch in my display tank?

The DSB in the refugium is unlikely to be of any value, so I'd skip that. An inch in the main tank should be fine.

there was a professor in Hawaii that did a study on dsb, ssb, and bb.
his conclusion was they all worked one has attributes the others don't. so it really is up to what you think is the best look for your tank. if you don't like looking at a bare bottom then don't go with bb. if you like gobys and don't like seeing a glass shining back at you then dsb is the better choice but it really depends on what you like
