Question Recirculating skimmer- advantages?

The more I read about skimmer suggestions the more I'm confused. Can anyone fill me in on recirc. skimmers, is there an advantage? What makes them different? Trying to decide on a skimmer is driving me nuts!
Thanks

A recirculating skimmer conceptually uses two pumps. One moves water through the skimmer. The other takes water from the skimmer, injects air, and puts the mix back into the skimmer. In practice, people with sumps run part of the return flow into the skimmer, so only one pump is used.

Supposedly, having separate controls for water movement and air circulation helps with efficiency and control. There's no objective data, though.

Sorry- thing posted before I was ready.-
I like the idea of being able to divert flow from tank directly into the skimmer/sump. I would think noise and power consumption would also be less.
I just want a no nonsense skimmer that works.
Thanks
