Budget Conscious Water Filtration
Hi all, just a quick question for all you aquatic gods and goddesses:
If I have a small tank (12 gallons) and do 2-gallon water changes, would it be ok to just pick up one of those Brita or Pur filtered water pitchers to get my water rather than plunking down $150+ for an RO/DI system? Thanks |

Buy the 2.5 gallon jugs of drinking water or spring water from walmart. Thats what I use for top offs and water changes.

Distilled water is cheaper. Usually 99 cents a gallon. Probrably a better bet for your mixed water because you will know exactly what is in your salt water after you mix it.

your local LFS probably sells RO water. Mine does it for 35cents per gallon.

If you are buying bottled get distilled water, bottled RO is usually packaged as drinking water and has minerals added back in for taste andspring water can be very high in minerals and other things, thats why it tastes so good!
Brita and Pur are strictly taste and odor filters for drinking water and do very little actual treatment other than carbon. If you choose to buy from a LFS make sure thay check the TDS coming from their storage containers in your presence. Lots of LFS tend to fall down on the cleaning and maintenace of their systems and leave a lot to be desired. |

I'd used distilled water or RO-DI from a good source, and probably get a TDS meter to check its quality, when the money became available.
