snails croaking!

I need help with my snails. I have nerite snails and three turbo snails. The nerite snails keep climbing out of the tank and the turbo's seem to be dieing one after the other. I'm down to one now. All my tests come back good. Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, ph. Maybe I need other test kits? Could I be getting hit with something else like phosphate? HELP!!!

I recently had the same issue with Turbo Snails dying. There are a couple of possibilities I came across in my research.
1. If your temperature goes to high with your light cycle that can contribute. My temp soared to 82 degrees by the end of my light cycle.
2. They are very sensetive to salinity changes. When topping off if addition too much freshwater too quickly could contribute.
3. I had a friend who had hermit crabs that would kill and eat them. Then move into their shells later on. Bristle worms cleaned up all the mess so it looked like a mistery until he caught them in the act on morning.
Hope that help.
John

Not the hermits. I put the turbo's on the glass walls and two fell off and they are still in the shells. The hermits I have are way small for that I would think. No gots bristle worms, thank God! Perhaps the temp? Whats a good temp for snails? I'm running at about 80. I got those worthless stick on guadges right now, I have to get a better temp guadge... Salinity is 1.023...

I am suprised that 80 would be too high, I think 78/80 is about ight.

What about topping off the tank and salinity changes & temp changes as a result of the topping off?

Do they have enough to eat?

I wish I could give you a more definative answer.

I only just put them in there like two days ago. Must be the temp changes and perhaps water top off... I'll go tonight to petco and see what i can find for a thermometer. Dam these guys are touchy! Yes there's enough coralline alge in there for them. Thats why i stuck them up to the walls in the first place! lol Still the neite snails are a mystery though. They like to actually get into the two hang on filters I have. They crawl right in there! I was told they only just came out of the ocean so keep knowing them down and they will get used to it. It's been three weeks of this! I tossed them in my sick tank1 I got sick of them crawling into my filters. So where are they? Under the upper edge of the tank! lol Weirdo's! lol Helmet heads!

i do not think they eat coraline algae. Coraline in good for the tank. They eat green plant type algae.

Third one just fell off an i did nothing! These are like the size of a 50 cent piece these turbo's... I'm gonna pick up some power heads and a new temp guadge. probably digital... I have two heaters in there now, total of 500watts. 150 gallon tank. So maybe the water circulating better would be an issue? I have two in there now but both sides of the tank don't seem to be in good sink with the other. I'll start there then...

When the turbos fall off do you turn then back upright? They can't turn themselves over so the will die if you don't flip them. BTW they fall off onto their back constantly.

Oh really! Thanks Michael. So whats so turbo about them? lol I went to petco tonight, where I bought them and the ones they had was doing the same thing. So i'm not so worried anymore. The guy there said he would give me replacements when they come in due to mine croaking like that. Thank God it wasn't something i did! Whew! Thanks all!

That salinity is pretty low. I target 1.026-1.027. This article will help with calibrating your device:

Ok I will raise the salinity a bit as well. Anyone know why they call these laimo's turbo snails? I was kinda expecting they were a very hardy eater.

zma21, Never thought of petco as reliable. They are just the only pet store left around here that's not so far away! I think they suck actually! Always gotta check what you buying before you buy it. I just discovered ick in there tanks and they quarantined the whole thing! lol They don't deal with sick tanks for some reason... Turbo snails-yeah right! My dead relatives are more turbo than these guys! I stood them back up but they arent moving....dead snails?! lol This is getting funny in my opinion! lol

Another think to look at:

Has your tank ever been treated with copper for any reason, or had any live rock that was in a copper treated tank? Inverts hate copper, and can't last long with it in the water.

No copper ever was in my tank. I'd have to say no to the live rock as well, but can you ever really tell with live rock? Thanks chris!
