Question using dead rock in a tank???

so im getting ready to put my tank together....by roomate has like 15 lbs of dead rock.....whould it be good to put that rock into my tank along with a peice of live rock so it will "seed" the dead rock.....

or

is it better the just buy all live rock???

By all means - use the dead rock and save yourself some $$$

I would not put it in if you have livestock in the tank. Any dead sponges and algae is going to cause a cycle.

Dead rock is perfect for base rock. Use it as the fondation of your reef, it is going to be covered with sand and never get any light anyways.

It will be fine. 90% of the rock in my existing 90 was dead dry base rock.

So was it live rock at one time then?? I asked the question before to make sure you are not just throwing rock in from the backyard.

yes, the live rock came from my 10 gallon that i had set up for 2+ years. It was fiji live rock but now is fiji dead rock lol. Its good rock and is pretty porous to allow for good surface area for bacteria go grow!

i had no where to put it after i tore the tank down so i dried it out and had it sitting around.
