I Love My Mjmod!
This is by far THE best $50 I have spent in this hobby!
I only started with one to try it out first. I got the 1200 high flow. It is running in a 125gal(6' long). I will get another for the other side but will probably not be able to run them at the same time. For those of us that can not afford Tunzes this is the answer.

Do you have a wave maker? I thought of getting the 1200 myself and use one on each side and have them make alternating current.
I recently removed my seio 1100's ( two of them ) for cleaning and all my critters, corals etc seem happier so I left them out for now. I'm thinking the 1200 would be great for me |

Check out mjmods in the vendor forum. There is a good discussion on this. The short of it is you want to use something that will give you AT LEAST 15 min of "on time".

I can't here mine over my other pumps LOL.
I hear there is some noise depending on how you mount it. The magnet holders that he sells lead to noise for some. I seemed to have done away with this by letting a good 1/2" bed of silicone dry on the back of the pump before glueing the magnet to it(he only recommends 1/4").

Most of the noise is going to come from poorly constructed mods. I have 4 mods in my 80 and one of them made noise because the center brace was vibrating. I simply added a small cross brace and no more noise.

I find even with meticulous detail to construction, they are noisy...most of which comes from 60Hz hum. Of course my tank is EXTREMELY QUIENT/SILENT so most people wouldn't be bothered by the level of noise that bothers me.

Your tank MUST be quiet if a 60Hz hum stands out! I have a pretty bare bones system. My mag 12(return) and sedra 7000(skimmer) make more noise than a little maxijet ever would.

The only thing I have on my tank is 4 mods, no sump, and some fans. After the fans turn off you can't hear anything.

Yes - Totally silent. Could probably hear a pin drop if I had hardwood floors - seriuosly. dc_909 - Can you give me some specifics as to HOW you built your impellars/propellars and which kit you are using since they are so silent? |

Also, I have a Tunze 6100 and it is totally silent - this is what I would like to achieve without buying a second one.

I made all my own parts. I did not by the mods. The shroud is 2 inches and cut out of ABS pipe. The rod is a carbon fiber rod attached to the centre brace, which is just a piece of rigid airline tube super glued to the shroud. The prop is a Octura 1435 shaved just enough so the PH will spin it underwater. It is superglued to rigid airline tubing, which is connected to the original magnet with a piece of black airline tubing. The entire shroud is connected the the PH with a PVC test cap cut to fit. I use mag floats to hold the mod in the tank.

dc-909 -
Thanks for giving some particulars. How snugly does the carbon fiber rod fit inside the original magnet? Could you possibly provide some closeup pictures of your mod? |

Well I had to drill out the center of the magnet slighlty to get it to fit, so it fits very nice. .098 I think is the size. I will try to get pics this evening when I get home.

Wonderful. I beleive my problem is that when I made my mod, I used a carbon fiber tube and shaft. The tube is inserted through the original magnet and glued after the old plastic shaft was removed. The carbon fiber shaft and tube fit well but there is some play between them and I suspect this is likely producing the noise. I like the idea of using the original magnet. I look forward to the pictures.
Cheers! |

I heard a rumor that MJ had modified there shafts (made them oval) to stop people from modifying them. Is this true?

That really doesn't make sense. They are making more money becuase people can mod them. If they can't mod them, people will find a different PH to mod.

My Maxi jet was brand new and I did the mod kit from MJMODS.COM with no problem. Ditto dc-909. I bet if maxi-jet ever did anything so dumb it would not be long before they were out of business. I strongly believe it is reefers that modify these things that account for a majority of their sales. And they know it.

It is a must for anyone with regular powerheads. I really can't see much usefullness out of an un-modded one. They are very simple. The first one takes some time, but it soon becomes very quick and easy and cheap.

Is there any place to buy them already modded? DIY and myself are foes of long standing.

anomie, Not that I could find. The kit that mjmods sells is so easy even I could do it. I see you are in Va. If you are in the Richmond area I would put them together for you. It only takes about 15 min.
