Help adding a remote deep sandbed.

Hi, I would like to add a remote deep sandbed to my 125g FOWLR tank to help decrease nitrates.
I currently have a wet/dry sump with a small section for macroalgae. I don't have enough room in the sump to have a big enough sandbed. I have heard of people adding remote sandbeds to their setups but don't really know an easy way to to it.

I was thinking of getting a big rubbermaid tank, filling it with sand and adding a pump in my sump to feed the sandbed. The rubbermaid would just drain back to the sump. I considered having one of my returns feed the sandbed but I really don't want to mess with my current plumbing. How does my idea sound? Any suggestions? Any risks doing it this way?
