Gonoporias are extremely "not hardy" nor are they beginner friendly. If you are able, I would recomend returning it to the store, or finding a new home for it with somebody that knows them well.

Sounds like brown jelly. This is often the first thing that happens to them when you get them home. Your hobby experience is only that of a couple months. Take it back.

I second Chrsnwk, those and alveopora should be avoided, they've got a poor track record. Depending on who sold it two you, you might want to consider that source suspect.

regarding the "no returns" policy... most stores have them that i've been it. If they stand by the policy, as if they have a trade in policy. if they don't, another local store might. stores i've dealt with in my neighborhood will give you cash or credit for about 50% of whatever they can sell it for. Given that it's already sickly, you might not get much for it, but something is better than nothing, and at the very least, somebody that knows the requirements of that particualr type of coral might be able to pick it up and nurse it back to health. I feel bad for you that your going to lose out on the deal and not get your $$$ back, but nobody in this hobby plans to "break even" consider it the price of gained knowledge.

Maybe down the road you'll be the one to get a deal on somebody else's impulse/misinformend/poorly recomended purchase.

Also, to go along with something Capt_Cully said, if you told the worker at whatever stor you bought this from you were new(ish) to the hobby, and they let you buy that without the "this isn't really a good idea" disclaimer, I'd consider taking my business elsewhere.

GOOD LUCK!!

Sorry for being a little bit rushed in my previous post. There's a couple things that you can do. You can either take it back somewhere for a trade, or you can try to nurse it back to health.

Goniopora come from extremely nutrient rich waters, and although they are photosynthetic, they rely heavily on constant feedings to survive. For this reason, they are usually on the way out by the time they make it to the consumer due to starvation. Goniopora are also extremely susceptible to contracting a disease called Brown Jelly. No one is exactly sure why they get this so often, or really positive on what Brown Jelly is, but if the starvation doesn't kill the coral, the Brown Jelly will.

If you want to try to nurse it back to health, you need to go out and get an Iodine dip for Corals. This can either be Seachem's Reef Dip, Kent Marine has one too, or Lugols. You need to prepare a bucket of saltwater (with the proper pH and temperature) and do a double dose of Iodine, and leave it in there for 10-20 minutes depending on how it reacts to the dip. This may clear up the jelly it may not. If the coral was starving to begin with, it'll probably die anyways. You need to dip it twice a day for several days, all the while watching closely.

If the infection is going to get better, you'll know pretty quickly. Don't be surprised if it loses a bunch of tissue. If it isn't going to get better, you'll know because the Brown Jelly will not clear up.

I strongly recommend you visit goniopora.org and speak with John Kelley, or please find someone that can properly take care of this coral. They need a lot of TLC to be happy.

I feel for you, I have the same problem. I was sold a gonopora under the recommendation that its an "easy care coral." I know it was my bad for not researching it further before I got it, but they are usually quite good in my LFS and have advised me against certain corals so I thought I it would be ok.

It seems there is a common misconception with gonopora that it’s easy when it’s very much not... no excuse, they should have known, but at least I don't think they deliberately misled me.

I'm going to take it back tomorrow, it's not looking in too bad shape, but I just don't trust myself with it.

I recommend the book "Corals a Quick Reference Guide" for future purchases (I just got it, lots of nice pictures)
There’s also a gonopora forum: http://www.goniopora.org/forum/index.php?board=1.0

I hope you can get your money back… or at least some of it. You win some you lose some.

Strange, since my last post my B&W female clown seems to have decided my gonopora will make the perfect host! It doesn't look too happy by her advances, lucky its going back tomorrow... I hope she isn't too heartbroken, she'll probably blame the poor hen-peaked male
