strange things on my skimmer

I pulled my skimmer out to clean it, and found hundreds of worm/sponge like things growing on it. many of them look the same, with a sponge like body and a little "spikey" thing sticking out of them.
Can anyone help me identify these things?

Its good to know they are harmless.
