Calcium Carbonate Help
I'm doubting myself and need some help. I bought some calcium carbonate sand. Actually for reptiles but it is pure calcium carbonate with no additives or silica. It is slightly cheaper than sand from a LFS. $16 dollar for 20lbs instead of 30 or more.
I already put it in my propagation tank( no live stock yet still cycling). Is this stuff ok? Arragonite is just a form of calcium carbonate but as I said I'm doubting myself. If this is ok I would like to add some to my 180 mixed reef. I will over the next couple months slowly replace my crushed coral with a 4 inch sand bed. What are your opinions Any help would be great. |

Should be fine. The only real thing one needs to worry about is any impurities in the sand which *might* be released in a DSB (5-6" of depth (or more) necessary to lower the pH enough to really cause any type of release from calcium-based sands or gravel).
Your sand is probably fine. Kevin
