It's Alive.....ALIVE!!!!!
I have been cycling my tank for a few weeks now, I added LR two weeks ago. I was kind of sad because the only things I was finding were Pods and http://melevsreef.com/id/jelly.html
Which Ive read are bad for the dank and I don't know how to get rid of them. Today I came back from work and fund my first big inhabitant so I wanted to share Does this mean I can start adding snails and crabs to the tank?

Actually pods are the best sign that your tank is cycling and they become one of the foundations for a successful reef (become food for many other life forms and consume detrius and some types of algae). The organism in your picture is a flatworm that preys upon various types of 'pods. This is normal also, just be careful their numbers dont become overwhelming.
It should be safe to add a few snails and hermits (if so desired). I would not add anything else for another few weeks, when the parameters have shown stable for at least two weeks in a row. ...The one thing about this hobby that makes us all better is that it does teach us patience

Pods are not bad for the tank they are good to have, the link to the pic you posted looks like a hydroid jelly I think and they will go away with time. The pic that is posted looks like a flat worm.

Nice Avatar too it is the coolest. I will wait until Saturday, test the parameters make sure they are ok.
So should I get snails or hermit crabs? Ive heard that hermit crabs are not very reef sage. I really like the electric blue hermit crab

Well just expect some of the snails to die if you put in hermits. Also make sure they have extra shells laying around to minimise snail death. Its really a personal preference, you can do it hermitless, or hermits and snails. I prefer both. Scarlet reef hermits are the least likely to kill btw.

It's unfortunate there is this kind of misinformation going around. Luckily you are in the right place. Pods are definitely a good thing.

Yes, pods are a good thing. Give it a few more days, and then add a few hermits and snails.

As for hermits and snails, I like having as much variety as I can. That being said, my scarlet leg hermit is getting to big i think.

That is a flatworm, I used to have a stack in my tank until I eradicated them all. Now sadly, I've since found out that those are apparently a benign kind of flatworm and are inherently friendly. Although you may want to doubble check that.

The pic posted is a flat worm and is the benign type(not bad not good). I have them in my newest tank. I just grab the big ones off the glass with a turky baster every few days to keep the numbers down.
You can also grab a wrase, If you get lucky like I did with my 6line wrase it will eat them. Most the time though they will eat everything else before the flatworms. |
