minimum setup for 55 gal holding tank

so yeah i need to move my bamboo shark out of my 75 because he keeps cutting himself on the rock until i get my bigger tank for him. i have a spare 55 gal that i could put him in by himself. what would be the minimum for filtration? Could i just get an ac500 and just dump it full of bio balls and a filter pad? The shark dosent' put off any waste hardly at all. I thought about going bare bottom with a powerhead to keep any debris kicked up to where the filter could grab it right away. would this work?
