Closed Loop On/Off

Does anyone run their closed loops only during the day for calmer nightime seas? Or do most of you leave them on 24/7? I am not sure it hurts the pump operation at all with startup/stop.

I noticed that my acros have serious polyp extension during the night and I thought it might be nice (at least once in a while to have calmer seas for feeding etc...)

Opinions?

generally, the sea doesnt calm down at night, and actually in places becomes rougher at night.. so ive never seen the need to ever turn off flow.

Thanks all. I guess what I meant is calmer seas in general. My Sequence Dart on an OM4-Way really makes a turbulent reef condition in my aquarium and my corals do apparently love it. Gies the old saying, "If it ain't broke don't fix it right"?

Having a house right on the sand on the Sea of Cortez in Mexico, we definitely experience differences in surface agitation from time to time and it often comes at night when the wind dies down and the swell falls off. The Sea of Cortez has spurts of literal dead calm versus various size waves and currents rolling in. I just thought it might be more natural to randomly vary the flow intensity wise rather than just directionally wise?

I will leave it on 24/7 for now.

Mine goes off 1 hour after the lights and turns on 1 hour before the lights. The return from the sump runs 24/7 so it's not completely still at night. I haven't noticed that the fish or corals notice any difference and it's about 10 hours I don't have to pay to run the pump.
