Octopus skimmer question?

I'm new to this salt water thing and am not familiar with skimmers. I got a recirculating Octopus 150 (no directions) and am not sure how the tee (after the ball valve) works in with the return line. I assume the tee could be replaced with an elbow if all the return goes back to the sump. Any help or suggestions with this skimmer would be much appreciated.
