Choice of 3 Skimmers

The last piece of my new tank puzzle is the skimmer.

The tank is a 46g with a 40g sump.

I'm looking at the following:

AquaC Urchin (or Urchin Pro)
Euro-Reef RS-80
Red Sea Berlin Turbo Classic

Thoughts, recommendations and experiences would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I only have experience with the Berlin, but its not that great. Out of the three listed, DEFINITELY go with the Euro! Its by far better than the other two. For a 46 g it will be great. Good luck

I just purchased a used RS80 and its awesome. The only thing I would recommend is getting an auto top off for your sump otherwise it's hard to maintain consistent skimming. That's the only problem I've had with mine.

I think the best of the 3 you mention is the ER. If you have truckloads of money I have heard the deltecs are nice skimmers as well.

Regards,

Pat

Hmmmmm....I guess you guys like the Euro-Reef

Now, can anyone tell me why the extruded acrylic version is $70 cheaper. Is extruded acrylic crappier? Is it worth the $70?

Either will work. If you take care of the unit either will work. You can't drop them or its toast. The cup especially. Of course you can always buy a replacement. The web site should specify what the differences are. Others can explain, I just think its the construction method of the acrylic.

Regards,

Pat

The Promo is cheaper because it is extruded acrylic, which is a cheaper way of manufacturing acrylic tubing. If you put an extruded acrylic tube next to a cast acrylic tube, you would not be able to tell the difference. If you ever try to drill the extruded is when you'll be able to tell which is which: extruded has a tendency to crack much earlier than cast, and is such just slightly harder to work with. That being said, if you don't plan on turning yours into a ReCirculating (RC) skimmer, I wouldn't be worried about the type of acrylic.

Thanks for all the advice.

I ordered the extruded acrylic version from MD yesterday.

The trip from the sump to the sink only crosses about 6" of tile, so I'm not worried about dropping anything.

Although the thought of skimmate on carpert is pretty gross.

Once again, thanks for the recommendation.
