New clown behaving wierd...

My newly acquired female Yellow Striped Maroon (got her two days ago) is swimming at the top corner of the tank. It just hangs out there in the corner at the level of the water swimming a little funny/at an angle. The male (brought in a day after and mated perfectly to each other) stays there with her but is alright. The other tankmates are a Bicolor Angel and a cleaner shrimp,..all doing fine.

She was fine yesterday. Yesterday my readings were :

Temp 77.4
Salinity 35 ppt
Amonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 30
Alk 11.5
Ph 8.05

I know my nitrates are on the high but i dont think its as bad as to create that behaviour. I was working on the tank today and might have stressed her but the others are fine and eating. She is not.

Any ideas ?

thanks

mac

Hmmm those nitrates are pretty high. You might try doing a water change to see if it helps her.

and you keeping FOWLR, FO or Reef?

I will do a water change immediately. The tank is 120g and i have about 130 lb of live rok in with about 200 lbs of sand. I think she has ich. It has some white clody thingies and what i can see as little dots on her. Barely visible. And she has her fins clamped. I was trying to catch her right t quarantine but couldnt.

Any links to itch remedies? I already have a cleaner shrimp...but she doesnt go near him

give the new girl a chance. if she dies then there was a problem. sometimes all it takes is time to let the ol' girl settle in.

Do a search over in the Clown forum. I think this is completely normal. My Perc pair have been hosting the corner of my tank since I got them two months ago. Turn all of the pumps off for 15 minutes and see what she does. Mine will start wandering when the pumps are off at feeding time.

If she has ich, I would get her out ASAP to try to prevent it spreading to other fish. Did you QT before you put her in?

Thanks guys,...she seems to be doing a little better. She is swimming around,..in fact now she is swimming faster and darts about. She is not eating yet. I put in another cleaner shrimp but she is not going near them. I also put garlic extract in the system and will get a fresh clam or shrimp from the market see if she picks at that

Clowns tend to pick out a spot and hang about it. Seems that the spot they pick is typically exactly where you don't want them to be. Let it be. Use garlic soaked foodstuff to try to get her interested in eating. Don't stand there oggling her... she's nervous. If you can dim the lights for about 10 minutes prior to feeding and make no movements in the room after you feed, that could help too.

Mac...wild caught or tank bred?
Did you see the fish eat before you bought it?

I actually own a yellowsripe and this is what they do for a few weeks eating little if nothing some days. Now it has claimed the suncoral as a home and comes to the top to ride the waves. Without brine shrimp i think it would have died.

I have brine shrimp. I will try that tomorrow. But it won't eat anything. Even garlic soaked. I put a fresh clam in the tank. Nothing. I don't think its ich. Its more velvety wider patches of white. She stays by a rock most of the time and then about twice a day swims around a little too fast and erratically. Heavy breathing. I also did a 20% water change. Raised temp to 80.
. I don't know if they're wild but they were eating at the shop. I think I might return her for a new one although I don't want to

Sorry about the formating. I'm writing from my phone

The swimming near the top is fairly normal for clowns. My pair do the same thing, normally after lights out when the moon lights come on. The swim right at the surface of the water, kind of on an agle. I think they might actually be playing with the reflection they see on the surface of the water.

Well the female definitely has either itch or brooklynella or velvet,..i know its a wide description,..but she has white-ish clouds and splotches on her. Labored breathing. She hides and once in a while swims erratically. Now i caught the little male scratching his side on the rock. My bicolor angel seems fine for now. What are the chances of them surviving this on their own ? I am feeding Cyclops soaked in garlic but they are not eating. Next thing will be to catch them (i have tried unsuccessfully) and return them to the store.....

Ok didn't know it had white splotches as well. Clowns are already hard to acclimate to a new environment. Maybe a quarintine with plenty of cover will do. Most of us here do not own a quarintine tank until we learn te hard way, I'm hopeing she will pull through.
