skimmer question

I just bought the octopus hang on back skimmer for my tank and there were no directions in the box, I was wondering if anyone knows if this skimmer is supposed to run for a while then stop for a while or is it supposed to just run all of the time, I think i might have a problem with this. Any input would be appreciated.

all skimmers that I know of are supposed to run 24/7 , do you mean its shutting off on its own?
