gate valves for herbie method

Hi all, I was just wondering with the "Herbie method" if you have to use a gate valve on both the overflow line going to the sump and the return line after the pump. I was hoping to just use one on the overflow line to the sump, but will plumb both if I have to. Thanks

I've just got one gate valve on the overflow line going to the sump. The return pump runs full bore.

I've also got two drains in my overflow. One is up a bit higher than the water level in the overflow as an "emergency". It's VERY easy for the drain you dial in with a ball valve to get a little out of balance; I've had a cerinth snail get stuck in my gate valve, causing the water to noisily gurgle down the emergency drain.
