Ehiem filter ?

I purchased a ehiem 2234 ecco canister filter on ebay. I want to use this to run carbon on my tank every month for a couple of day's. I might need to rethink that schedule but that was what I was planning. The filter came with a carbon pad and some tan media balls, ehiem refers to this as substrate pro. Any ideas what this is? Also if all I plan to run is carbon with this filter do I just by bulk carbon and fill up a basket with it? I am not quiet sure how to go about this should I run some other media for benifit? Any help would be great...

IMO If you want to run carbon then there is no need to have the substrate in there. Yes you can fill up the canister with carbon. I would think you would want to run the carbon all the time ? Make sure you wash the carbon very good before putting it in the filter

The media balls are a bio filtration media. No need for it if you have plenty of live rock. I would just use the carbon like you plan to and make sure you do weekly/monthly maintenance to avoid any nitrate issues.

All righty then no media balls just carbon. I have plenty of live rock, just got the 1st half of my package. I plan on waiting till after the second half to start running the carbon. I guess it wouldn't help with calcium if I got some of that and ran it with the carbon? No idea on that just thinking out loud.
