Moonlights??

Are moonlights nessasary?And what are some types being used??

Yeah they do look really cool shimmering in the darkness. I'm sure they have some beneficial qualities, I just don't know what they are.

I kinda thought you could use the moon lights' to fake out your coral into propagating?

I think my LED's are blueish, it's a Coralife PC 2x65 w/ lunars.

thanks...i'll have to look into some....Still waiting for my lights from the LFS....Back ordered for 3 weeks now....2x 48"Double bulb t5's I'll pick out bulbs when they come in....Any suggestions?I plan on building up with some soft corals to start...

Some corals don't like the moonlights. Calfo did a big article on this and actually reported zoas not liking them.

The general understanding in the hobby is that moonlights in an aquarium help trigger the natural reproductive cycle of microfauna, making for a more healthy 'pod and planktonic population. I can't speak to whether or not the corals themselves like it or not, or what the moonlight will trigger spawning events in the corals. That might be a coincidental observation due to the fact that the corals have more food, therefore are healthier, therefore an assumption is made, but it's just a result not a cause.

One real, practical benefit is that it's cool as hell to see what happens at night on the reef. Those little critters that are noctournal get busy, and you have a chance to see your corals with tentacles fully extended for feeding. It's a completely different experience!

So; necessary? No. Great addition... absolutely!
